Parents Have The Last Word

On Friday, The Conservative Review posted an article about a recent Chino Valley Unified School Board in southern California.

The article reports:

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond spoke at the meeting for the Chino Valley Unified School Board in an attempt to dissuade the members from voting for a policy requiring parents be informed about their children’s gender decisions.

When Thurmond tried to speak past the allotted time, he was berated by Chino Valley Unified Board President Sonja Shaw who accused him of trying to “pervert” children and said he had threatened the board.

Videos on social media showed police officers escorting Thurmond out of the meeting.

…The board went on to vote in favor of the policy securing parents’ rights, 4 to 1.

The article notes:

Shaw fired back and doubled down on her position.

“We’re going to safeguard parental rights,” she told KTLA-TV. “That is a constitutional right and we’re going to make sure that our parents at Chino Valley know they’re sending their kids here to be taught, not to be anything else.”

Officials in Temecula, another city in southern California, similarly rejected a social studies book that praised gay activist Harvey Milk after some school board members pointed out that he had admitted having a relationship with a 16-year-old male while in his thirties.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom lashed out at the board and called its members “radicalized zealots” and “extremists.”

Why are you considered an extremist if you want to know what is going on with your child? The move to discount parents is not new. In some states, a child under 18 can get an abortion without her parents’ knowledge, but cannot get her ears pierced or be given an aspirin in school. Parents have the right to know what is going on with their children. If a child is moving toward a life-changing event before they are of a responsible age, the parents need to know about it. One of the things that may actually save us from the abuses of the transgender movement is that many of the children who received ‘gender affirming care’ as children are now reaping the consequences as adults. Some of these now adults are suing the medical profession and the companies that supplied the drugs. If enough of these children collect damages for what was done to them, the transgender movement will diminish considerably.

The Strange World Of The Liberal Left

I am hoping for an honest presidential election in 2024. That may be a baseless hope, but I am hoping. We have come to a fork in the road–do Americans want to be governed by people who truly represent them or by people who only represent themselves? Are we going to vote for the man who wants us to be free or the man who wants to control us? Right now, California Governor Gavin Newsom is running around the country claiming that California represents freedom and Florida represents tyranny. That’s a very interesting campaign approach considering that California is losing population and Florida is gaining population.

Gavin Newsom became Governor of California in 2019. On April 11, Townhall reported that California has fallen in population for the third consecutive year, after having previously experienced nothing but population growth for its entire existence. According to the same article, Florida has gained more than 700,000 new residents since 2020. So Gavin Newsom, who is running for President, is giving Ron DeSantis advice on how to run his state?!

The article at Townhall reports:

If Biden eventually defies conventional wisdom and pulls the plug on 2024, Newsom conspicuously covets the Democratic nomination.  As a bonus, if he were to win the presidency, he’d get to join the many Californians who are flooding away from his state.  Like many other leftists, it appears as though he’s rooting rather openly for Trump to be the GOP nominee.  Notice that the clip of Newsom above was shared by a Trump fan, as the Trumpworld/Leftist alliance against DeSantis continues to take shape.  The original poster actually argued that Newsom isn’t rooting for Trump to be the Republican candidate, but was giving “honest advice” here.  And if there’s one thing Gavin Newsom is known for, it’s his unfailingly truthful and good-faith guidance to help Republicans be more politically successful.  If someone believes that, or expects others to believe that, I’m not even sure what to say.

It is going to be a very interesting election season. I am just hoping that the outcome of the presidential race has not already determined by someone sitting in a basement with a computer.

Making A Bad Situation Worse

As of April of this year, California had the highest gasoline taxes in the nation [51 cents per gallon (article here)]. Now Governor Newsom is going to do something that will increase the pain at the pump for Californians.

On Sunday, Townhall reported:

Just when Californians thought they were getting a break on high gas prices, they shot up again, hitting $7 in some areas.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif) called for an emergency session of the state legislature to propose a tax that will rip off what he calls the “greed of oil companies.”

“I’m calling for a Special Session to address the greed of oil companies. Gas prices are too high,” Newsom tweeted, adding “time to enact a windfall profits tax directly on oil companies that are ripping you off at the pump.”

The oil companies are not ripping you off at the pump. The higher gasoline prices are caused by the Biden administration’s war on fossil fuel and by The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) deciding to reduce production in order to keep prices high. The Biden administration has done what it could to limit lending to oil companies while also limiting their ability to drill for oil. It has also stopped pipelines that cheaply and safely move oil from one place to another. The rise in prices at the gas pump are simply a reflection of the economic principle of supply and demand. Governor Newsom either never studied economics or chooses to ignore what he learned.

Remember, corporations do not pay taxes–their customers do.

The article notes that the Governor was mocked on Twitter for wanted to raise the tax on oil companies. At least some people on Twitter understand the economics of the issue.

The article concludes:

Meanwhile, California Assembly GOP leader James Gallagher and Vince Fong, the Assembly Budget Committee vice chair argued for Newsom to not call for the special session.

They said that lawmakers should suspend the state’s gas tax if the governor does take this action.

Stay tuned.

What Parents’ Rights?

On Sunday, Just the News posted an article about a law Governor Newsom of California signed on Thursday.

The article reports:

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Thursday allowing California to take “temporary emergency jurisdiction” over a child that traveled to the state for transgender drugs or operations, stripping parents of their authority over their kids.

“States across the country are passing laws to demonize the transgender community, especially transgender youth and their parents,” Newsom wrote to the California State Senate upon signing the bill, adding that “82% of transgender individuals have considered killing themselves, and 40% have attempted suicide, with suicidality highest among transgender youth. This is unacceptable – we must fight for our youth and their parents.”

The law has been a major source of controversy. Parental rights groups around the country raised the alarm about then-bill SB 107, arguing it violates the Constitution by wrongly claiming jurisdiction over families from other states.

This is totally insane. The statistics the Governor cites regarding suicide are related to the mental problems these children are having–thinking they are trans and wanted to surgically altar their bodies is part of mental illness. Children who believe they are trans should be strongly encouraged to hold off on any permanent body changes until they are over 25. Science tells us that their brains are not developed enough to make that decision before the age of 25.

The article concludes:

“SB 107 makes California akin to the Pied Piper, enticing minor children nationwide to leave their families and run away in pursuit of harmful drugs and sterilizing surgeries, all of which cause irreversible harm to the minds, bodies, and family relationships of America’s precious children,” the letter said. “According to the American College of Pediatricians, 80 to 95 percent of children who experience gender confusion will ultimately embrace their biological sex if they are not encouraged to pursue gender identity treatments. Children experiencing gender confusion need the love, support, and guidance of their parents.”

Newsom, though, signed the legislation, which passed along party lines and will take effect at the beginning of the year.

“With the signing of this bill, California will ensure these kids and their families can seek and obtain the medical and mental health care they need,” Newsom said.

This is not the medical and mental health care they need! First of all, children who believe they are trans need to be taken off of social media where it is ‘cool’ to be trans. Then, objective mental health professionals need to spend time with them helping them sort out the reasons they are feeling this way. At one point, a therapist who was dealing with a young boy who wanted to be a girl learned that the boy had a younger sister who was handicapped and the boy simply wanted his parents to pay as much attention to him as they did to his sister. It would have been a horrible mistake to encourage that child to undergo medical procedures that would forever alter his life.

What Happened In California

On Friday, Front Page Magazine posted an article by Daniel Greenfield. Mr. Greenfield generally focuses on the radical Left and Islamic terrorism, but stumbled upon the following information during an Uber ride from the airport. Please follow the link above to read the entire article. I will post some of the highlights.

The article reports:

After a long cross-country flight, I made it out of LAX and into an Uber. I wasn’t in the mood to talk, but the driver was. And hearing that I was a journalist, he wanted to tell me a story. I’ve heard a lot of stories over the years, but this may have been the most important one I let go.

He hadn’t always been driving an Uber at 11:30 at night. Not all that long ago he used to have his own business with 7 trucks before he was bankrupted by California’s insane regulations.

I listened, but didn’t pay enough attention. The impact of California’s Democrat legislative supermajority on truckers was just another data point alongside what was happening to freelancers of all kinds and a lot of small businesses. Stories like this were everywhere and there was little interest in them even in conservative circles outside the tarnished golden state.

…The massive supply chain mess that’s leaving stores empty and orders unfulfilled doesn’t have a single point of failure, but dozens of them. China’s energy shortages, the overhyped predictive powers of Big Data, the fragility of the global economy, fuel costs, and welfare state worker shortages are all players. But California’s truck bans are a key link in the great failure chain.

While I was riding home that night, California trucking companies were going bankrupt at a rapid rate. Few outside the industry were paying attention or understood what that might mean.

2019 was described as a “bloodbath” for the trucking industry with 640 trucking companies across the country filing for bankruptcy in just the first half of the year. Thousands of truck drivers were left unemployed. Many went into the expanding last mile delivery business, some as contractors for Amazon. But California truckers and businesses had their own special woes.

Two years ago, Governor Newsom signed the Democrat supermajority’s Assembly Bill 5 into law. While AB5 was billed as a crackdown on Uber and Lyft, forcing the companies to treat l freelance contractors as employees, the gig economy companies pushed Proposition 22 so that they were the only ones exempt from the law. (A Democrat judge has since illegally blocked the approved ballot measure while falsely claiming that it was unconstitutional.)

AB5 however was less about Uber than it was about outlawing freelance employees in order to force them into unions. The union power grab inconvenienced Uber and Lyft, but crushed freelance workers in a variety of fields including journalism. One of the fields was trucking.

Over the summer, the California Trucking Association actually went to the Supreme Court to fight AB5 and allow owners and operators to use independent contractors. The CTA listed 70,000 owner operators. In the years since AB5, Ubers have become scarcer and more expensive, which is what the law was actually designed to do, but the consequences to the trucking industry have been far worse albeit invisible to most people until now. While truckers are still protected from AB5, many in the industry are not willing to bet their future on SCOTUS.

AB5 was not only the assault on the trucking industry by California Democrats who were aggressively trying to unionize the industry and to impose environmental regulations on it.

The article then goes on to detail California’s efforts to switch all of its trucking to electric trucks.

The article notes:

While the ultimate truck ban was scheduled for 2045, an initial phase-in of 5% to 9% begins in 2024. Last year, California’s DMV began refusing to register thousands of trucks with an estimated 100,000 trucks under threat. With “green” trucks costing $70,000 more, this was a non-starter for already troubled independent owner-operators and even larger companies.

…Biden called for ports to operate around the clock, but that’s not going to magically bring back thousands of trucks or truckers. California Democrats still haven’t changed their regulations and without that, there’s no incentive or even legal structure that would allow trucks to operate.

Laws have consequences.

A Governor Involved in Trivial Pursuit

California has problems. Governor Newsom is being recalled for various reasons (probably a good thing, only the last time California recalled a governor, they wound up with Arnold Schwarzenegger). But Governor Newsom is currently doing some things that might help businesses in the state that have been negatively impacted by his shutdowns.

Gregg Jarrett is reporting the following today:

California theme parks will reopen April 1, but with one caveat: shouting and screaming must be limited. How fun! California Attractions and Parks Association (CAPA) executive director Erin Guerrero said in a statement, “California’s amusement parks are excited to responsibly reopen under the recently released state guidance…these guidelines do not require parks to prohibit screaming.” However, that seems to be exactly what will happen.

The theme parks must abide by Governor Gavin Newsom’s updated Blueprint for a Safer Economy. Although Governor Newsom does not himself follow his own guidelines, he will demand the citizens of California to.

The anti-fun police are at it again. Let’s look at this a minute. The at-risk population for the coronavirus is the over-60 crowd or those with certain health issues. How likely are they to be on roller coasters? Can’t the state protect those at risk and let the people who are not at risk enjoy themselves?

The article notes:

In the Blueprint for a Safer Economy, California businesses must limit shouting and raised voices because, well, they are “known” to cause an increased spread of COVID-19. So, while Guerrero used empty words, “the California Attractions and Parks Association Responsible Reopening Plan addresses the need to limit shouting, screaming and hollering on roller coasters, thrill rides and other theme park attractions” reports The OC Register.

CAPA represents Disneyland, Universal Studios, Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, SeaWorld San Diego, Legoland California, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and California’s Great America. Don’t expect to have too much fun there as “CAPA proposes the theme parks can ‘mitigate the effects of shouting’ through the use of mandatory face coverings and modified seat loading patterns on amusement park rides.”

Good grief!

This Doesn’t Seem To Be The Answer

Just the News reported yesterday that one month after California Governor Newsom unilaterally ordered state residents to wear masks in most public settings, the average daily number of coronavirus cases in the state has increased by over 160%. Wow.

The article reports:

Newsom’s June 18 order “mandate[d] that face coverings be worn state-wide” while in “any indoor public space,” while on public transit, during virtually every form of work in which the public might be involved in some way, while walking through “hallways, stairways, elevators, and parking facilities,” while in “any room or enclosed area where other people (except for members of the person’s own household or residence) are present when unable to physically distance,” and in outdoor settings where six feet of distance between individuals is not possible.

Every state resident older than two years old is bound by the mandate; a small number of exceptions exempt individuals due to medical conditions and other limited circumstances.

…The website of Johns Hopkins University, which offers pandemic tracking tools for every U.S. state, says average daily cases in California have increased from 3,385 on the day of Newsom’s order to 8,889 as of July 16, an increase of 162%.

Though Newsom’s mask mandate appears to have had little effect on the trajectory of the virus in California, the governor nevertheless this week imposed additional mask requirements on the state, ordering that most students who return to school in the fall will be subject to “strong mask requirements,” namely that “all staff and students in 3rd grade and above will be required to wear a mask or face covering” during the school day.

Can you imaging trying to keep a mask on the third grader all day? I don’t know why the masks did not help, but I think we need to look at this carefully. If the coronavirus spread that much with masks, why are we mandating them?
