Pay Attention To The Pattern

On Tuesday, The Federalist posted an article about the actions of private corporations regarding the war in Ukraine. Private corporations are denying services or products to Russia or to entitles connected to Russia. They are conducting their own private boycotts. Some of these companies are major corporation such as American Express, Apple, and Microsoft. That may seem like a good thing, but the pattern is troubling.

The article reports:

It could be tempting to cheer the move for targeting Russia’s authoritarian regime and condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked attacks on the people of Ukraine. But the actions by private companies against Russians are part of a larger swing by U.S. corporations to deny services to those whose opinions they deem unacceptable — and that’s exactly the kind of social credit system Russia is building to impose on its own people.

That’s what we saw in Canada when bank accounts and other assets of protesting truckers were frozen.

The article notes:

Punishment might include anything from slower internet speeds to being barred from flying or staying in certain hotels. There have also been reports of people being denied higher education and having their pets confiscated.

If you think comparisons between Russia and China’s authoritarian credit systems and the increasing dragnet in the United States are outlandish, just think about how Mastercard and American Express blocked donations to Americans whose beliefs about the 2020 election were found unacceptable, while Visa’s political action committee used the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021 to “temporarily suspend[] all political donations.” Paypal, Venmo, and Shopify all went after people who were supposedly involved in the riot.

A friend of mine had her Paypal account terminated because she used a credit card to buy a hamburger in Washington on the weekend of January 6th. She did not go near the Capitol–she went back to her hotel room after the rally, but her Paypal account was still canceled because her credit card company reported that she had made a transaction in Washington that weekend. This is not the America I grew up in.

The article concludes:

We shouldn’t cheer U.S. firms for appointing themselves the arbiters of who deserves to participate in our economy (and by extension, our society). If they can do it to Russia, they can do it to you.

But we also shouldn’t cheer such actions because they move us one step closer to blurring the line between ourselves and the authoritarian tyrants we purport to denounce. If we defeat Russia or China by making our differences unrecognizable, we’ve already lost.

Responding To Public Pressure

On Saturday, Fox Business reported that GoFundMe had reversed its decision to redistribute the donations made to the Canadian truck drivers protesting vaccine mandates and other Covid restrictions. GoFundMe was planning to redistribute the donations made for the truckers to other organizations.

The article reports:

Facing a potential fraud investigation by the state of Florida, GoFundMe reversed a decision to redistribute money given by thousands of donors to the Canadian “Freedom Convoy” protesting COVID-19 regulations.

On Friday, the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe froze the convoy’s official campaign, claiming law enforcement convinced the company that the convoy had become violent and unlawful.

GoFundMe encouraged donors to submit a refund form, and said that any funds not properly returned to donors would be donated to a charity chosen by the Freedom Convoy.

Within hours, however, GoFundMe walked back the refund applications, instead announcing it would be refunding donors automatically.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said that he would “investigate” the company, accusing them of fraud.

The article concludes:

Critics of the company’s haphazard cancellation include Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who questioned whether there is a “double-standard,” given past fundraisers for legal funds in defense of antifa members and criminal protesters.

There is a double standard. There is also the fact that organizations should not be able to take donations for one case and channel them to another cause. Good for Governor DeSantis for standing up to the attempted theft of charitable donations.

Support From The People Who Know

On Wednesday, 100% Fed Up posted an article about one group of people who have come out to help the Canadian truckers.

The article reports:

Polish immigrants arrived in Ottawa today with truckloads of Polish food for the Canadian truckers – #TruckersForFreedom – protesting the trucker vaccine mandate.

Thousands of Canadians have already come out in support of these truckers and what they stand for, lining the streets and highways to cheer on the convoy.

Among all of the support the truckers are getting, some of the most impactful support came from a group of Polish women, who were interviewed by Laura Lynn Tyler Thompson, former co-host of The 700 Club Canada.

Pulling up with trucks and crates filled with 1,550 Polish sausages, pączkis (polish donuts), and bread, these women came prepared to feed as many truckers as possible with all their delicious food.

When asked by Thompson why they brought all of this food, one of the women, Bernadette, replied,

“Because we stand behind them. We come from [a] communist country, and we came here because we didn’t want to have oppression. We wanted to live in the free country, and for the last two years, we’re living like prisoners. We are being told to stay at home, we’re told not to go to the restaurant, not to go to the church! I mean, this is unbelievable during communism times we were able and free to go to the church… I really can’t take it anymore.”

Wow. The backlash to the overreach of the Canadian government is amazing. Hopefully the backlash will spread to America in an obvious way. Please follow the link above to read the entire article and see the pictures. It is encouraging to see the people who have lived under tyranny protest the beginnings of tyranny in a supposedly free country.

When The Spin Is Obvious…

On Monday, The Daily Wire posted an article with the following headline, “Say What? Trudeau Claims Canadians Are ‘Disgusted’ Over Truck Convoy Protesters.”

The article includes the following tweet:

Actually, the reason people are protesting in the nation’s capital is that they are disgusted by the way the Canadian politicians are acting.

The article notes:

As The Daily Wire reported on Saturday, large crowds gathered in Ottawa to protest against the nation’s vaccine mandates, particularly against truckers in the nation:

Video of the massive Freedom Convoy 2022 rally in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, illustrate how people showed up in massive numbers from daylight through night to protest against the Canadian government’s vaccine mandates. Those mandates would force unvaccinated Canadian truckers crossing into the United States to quarantine once they’ve returned home.

Freedom Convoy spokesman Benjamin Dichter told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, “We’ve seen Canada go from a country of Justin Trudeau’s promises of ‘sunny ways’ into dark authoritarian oppression and control. We want two things: we want to get rid of the vaccine mandates and the passports. And the passports, that’s the really concerning one. Yesterday it was my first time ever crossing the border in my truck with my digital passport, and I held my phone up to the border agent to give him the QR code. You know what he said to me? ‘Oh, it’s okay, I don’t need it.’”

“So what do you mean, you don’t need it?” Richter recalled asking, adding that the agent replied, “Your phone already popped up on my screen and is correlated with your passport.”

“Think of that,” Richter said. “Can you believe that? So they know everybody who’s coming up to the border before they’re there and they’re tracking them. Maybe it’s outlandish, but what’s to prevent the government from introducing that across Canada and not limiting it to just borders?”

Don’t believe the spin. The world is watching and supporting the truckers. Please follow the link to read the entire article.

Hopefully, This Will Be A Futile Effort

Yesterday John Hinderaker at Power Line Blog posted an article illustrating how the mainstream media would try to discredit what the truck drivers in Canada are doing.

The article reports:

You no doubt are aware of the protest being staged by thousands of Canadian truck drivers who have now converged on Ottawa. The truckers began by protesting against a vaccination mandate for truckers crossing the U.S. border, but it has grown into a movement opposing extreme and irrational anti-covid measures, and promoting freedom generally.

Naturally, the liberal press is horrified. You likely have seen this bizarre editorial cartoon that appeared in–where else–the Washington Post:

When I first saw the cartoon, I literally did not understand it. Someone had to explain that the Post’s cartoonist is calling the truckers who are demonstrating on behalf of freedom fascists. Freedom is slavery, after all.

The article goes on to note that the liberal media is hoping that the protest will turn violent (giving them further reason to condemn it).

The article quotes The New York Times:

Thousands of protesters on foot, many carrying handmade signs on hockey sticks, wandered through the parked vehicles and the slow-moving traffic or gathered on the lawn in front of Parliament. Some of them carried Canadian flags upside down; at least one flag had swastikas drawn on it.

The article notes:

Liberals always try to imply that if someone draws a swastika it means that person is pro-Nazi. Actually, it means (in this context, at least) that the person is accusing the Canadian government of using Nazi-like tactics. I don’t agree, but let’s not smear the protesters by inverting the intent behind their signs.

The article concludes:

Here is more on the truckers’ protest from the BBC.

Defence Minister Anita Anand said the incidents were “beyond reprehensible”.

No incident described was even remotely violent. This one is darkly humorous:

Ottawa police said in a Twitter post that “several” investigations were now under way into the “desecration” of a number monuments in the capital city….

So now the Left is against desecrating monuments! I thought it had become more or less compulsory.

Putting aside whatever you may think about vaccination mandates, the hostility of the press’s response to any movement that expresses a desire for freedom is striking.

The ruling class does not like it when people begin to wake up.
