Beware The False Narrative

On Saturday, Hot Air posted an article about the narrative the media (and the Democrats) have put forth about the shooting in Minneapolis on Saturday. The narrative somehow does not acknowledge that resisting arrest when having a gun is a really bad idea.

The article reports:

Few people really know what exactly happened this morning in Minneapolis, and that certainly includes the governor and Mayor of Minneapolis. 

Yet both of them started making statements blaming ICE for the shooting of an armed man who was resisting arrest, and seemed to be encouraging the citizens of Minneapolis to attack ICE because they are part of an “invasion” of the state. 

Enforcing federal law is not an invasion of the state. In this case it is the federal government doing the job the state is supposed to do.

The article notes:

Democrats have already settled on a narrative, which amounts to a claim that ICE and the Border Patrol are not legitimate law enforcement officers, that they are kidnapping children and peaceful American citizens, and that everybody being arrested is a “neighbor” who was just minding their business and making our communities stronger.

…Senate Democrats, who haven’t a clue about conditions in Minneapolis, are attacking ICE as a violent version of the Keystone Cops. They are untrained, incompetent, but also Gestapo agents who are arresting innocent rapists and murderers who are, through adding their diversity, increasing the strength of our community.

…The reality is that the streets are being taken over by Black Bloc rioters who are assaulting federal agents every day, and that death threats against ICE agents are a fact of life here in Minneapolis. Random people are being stopped in the streets by anti-ICE “protesters” and harassing them.

…Frey and Walz have all the tools to keep the peace, and could, at any time, tone down the temperature and the rhetoric. All they need to do is assist in the peaceful apprehension of known criminals and turn over the criminal illegal aleins in jail.

…But the media and the Democrats think they have a winning issue on their hands, and want to make Trump back down. They have chosen a more violent version of the same strategy used in the shutdown. They hold the power to end the problem, but milk it for political reasons and blame the president for not doing what they, themselves, have the power to do.

When was the last time you saw a Democrat do something good for his country rather than something he thought was good for his party?

If you want peace in your city, elect someone who will uphold the law!

Taking Action In Minnesota

On Tuesday, Hot Air reported that subpoenas were served on Monday to at least five Democratic officials in Minnesota as part of of the investigation into the response to the federal government crackdown on illegal immigrants in that state.

The article quotes a New York Times report:

Federal prosecutors issued subpoenas on Tuesday to at least five Democratic officials in Minnesota, ramping up the Justice Department’s investigation into their response to the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration crackdown in the state, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The subpoenas sought documents from Gov. Tim Walz, Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis and Mayor Kaohly Her of St. Paul related to their policies on immigration enforcement efforts in the state. Two Minnesota prosecutors, Keith Ellison, the state attorney general, and Mary Moriarty, the Hennepin County attorney, were also sent similar subpoenas…

While the subpoenas did not cite a specific criminal statute, the inquiry as a whole was said to center on whether elected officials in Minnesota had conspired to impede the thousands of federal agents who have been in the state since last month looking for undocumented immigrants. But the investigation is likely to run up against stiff pushback for examining political speech and conduct that is traditionally protected by the First Amendment.

Free speech is protected by the First Amendment. The right to worship is also protected by the U.S. Constitution.

The article concludes:

The polling on Walz’s attacks on ICE must have been pretty bad because he’s really done a 180 in the past week. Instead of repeating that the state was at war with federal agents he’s now, for the second time, calling for calm. Walz is acting like an arsonist who suddenly decides to make friends with the fire department to help his image. If you want calm, governor, stop throwing rhetorical bombs at the feds and making demands you have no right to make. And you could make a call to Mayor Frey and ask him to dial it back a bit as well.

I have always heard the expression, “Minnesota nice.” I am not sure it applies right now although I suspect that a lot of the people who are making trouble are not actually residents of the state.

The Question Is…

On Wednesday, Townhall posted an article with this headline, “Why Did Tim Walz and Jacob Frey Release Nearly 500 Criminal Aliens?” That is a very good question. The probable reason is that their sentences or holding time were up and he didn’t want to turn them over to the The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The article reports:

“For example: One of the things we’ve asked Gov. Walz and Mayor Frey is to give us just the criminals you have in jail,” said Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. “They’ve released 490 murderers, and rapists, and drug traffickers onto their streets, rather than just give them to us — and that’s what I don’t understand.”

The Trump administration has argued that Democrat politicians in Minnesota have conspired to impede federal immigration enforcement operations, resulting in subpoenas for Walz, Frey, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and others.

…In the interview, Noem also disputed the claim that federal agents have strayed from standard practices. “We’re doing the same thing that law enforcement has done for years — under this administration, under the Biden administration — all of them,” Noem stated.

Since the launch of Operation Metro Surge in December, ICE has apprehended 3,000 aliens in Minnesota alone. The “Worst of the Worst” were featured on Noem’s social media accounts on Tuesday.

Noncooperation with ICE seems to be a Democrat policy. That is puzzling to me. I think most Americans want criminals in jail or out of their neighborhoods, why would the Democrats stand so firmly on this issue? Right now Americans may not understand that criminals are being let out into their neighborhoods, but eventually they will. If the policy of letting illegal alien criminals out of jail, we can expect more violence in our cities in the future. Eventually that violence will make its way out to the rural areas of the country. I know a few rural sheriffs who will not put up with this!

Should We Forgive The Student Loans Of People Who Don’t Exist?

On Tuesday, The Federalist posted an article about another scandal in Minnesota involving government funds.

The article reports:

In Minnesota, home to the largest population of Somali immigrants in the U.S. and the site of numerous fraud investigations, fraudsters received $12.5 million in student loan and education grant money, according to a letter Education Secretary Linda McMahon sent to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

The letter calls on Walz to resign, and states that a new fraud prevention system at the department has found over $1 billion in “attempted financial aid theft,” including by international fraud rings and artificial intelligence (AI) bots.

“[Y]our careless lack of oversight and abuse of the welfare system has attracted fraudsters from around the world, especially from Somalia, to establish a beachhead of criminality in our country,” McMahon wrote. “As President Trump put it, you have turned Minnesota into a ‘fraudulent hub of money laundering activity.’”

It is disturbing to me that international bad actors are taking advantage of the lack of accountability in spending American taxpayer money.

The article concludes:

In June, the Department of Education announced a “nationwide effort to eliminate identity theft and fraud in the federal student aid programs for the fall 2025 semester,” and a requirement for institutions of higher education to verify “certain first-time applicants who are enrolled in the summer term,” as an immediate effort to combat fraud.

“Federal Student Aid (FSA) data indicates that the rate of fraud through stolen identities, particularly involving technologically advanced fraud rings, has reached a level that imperils the federal student assistance programs,” the department stated at the time.

Another obvious safeguard, also announced by the Education Department in June, required first-time student aid applicants to “present, either in person or on a live video conference, an unexpired, valid, government-issued photo identification to an institutionally authorized individual and the institution must preserve a copy of this documentation.”

As the department has noted, the Biden administration removed verification capabilities for student loans and “diverted resources from fraud prevention toward its illegal loan forgiveness efforts,” opening the door for massive fraud.

I think it is time to turn the student loan program back to the states and back to private banks. I suspect that will end a lot of the fraud. Private business will always do a better job than the government. Note that it is the people from private industry put in place by President Trump that are finding the fraud.

Welfare Fraud In Minnesota

Not every country in the world is interested in ethical behavior. America, even with its flaws, values honesty. Many years ago, my husband and I were talking to a missionary who trained pastors in another country. He talked about the problem of explaining to them that it was wrong to cheat on their exams. In their country, cheating was no big deal. America needs to consider the values of the countries it accepts immigrants from or we will find ourselves dealing with pockets of immigrants who see nothing wrong with cheating. We are dealing with that problem now in Minnesota.

On Wednesday, The City Journal reported:

Minnesota is drowning in fraud. Billions in taxpayer dollars have been stolen during the administration of Governor Tim Walz alone. Democratic state officials, overseeing one of the most generous welfare regimes in the country, are asleep at the switch. And the media, duty-bound by progressive pieties, refuse to connect the dots.

In many cases, the fraud has allegedly been perpetrated by members of Minnesota’s sizeable Somali community. Federal counterterrorism sources confirm that millions of dollars in stolen funds have been sent back to Somalia, where they ultimately landed in the hands of the terror group Al-Shabaab. As one confidential source put it: “The largest funder of Al-Shabaab is the Minnesota taxpayer.”

Our investigation shows what happens when a tribal mindset meets a bleeding-heart bureaucracy, when imported clan loyalties collide with a political class too timid to offend, and when accusations of racism are cynically deployed to shield criminal behavior. The predictable result is graft, with taxpayers left to foot the bill.

The article continues:

If you were to design a welfare program to facilitate fraud, it would probably look a lot like Minnesota’s Medicaid Housing Stabilization Services program. The HSS program, the first of its kind in the country, was launched with a noble goal: to help seniors, addicts, the disabled, and the mentally ill secure housing. It was designed with “low barriers to entry” and “minimal requirements for reimbursement.” Nonetheless, before the program went live in 2020, officials pegged its annual estimated price tag at $2.6 million.

Costs quickly spiraled out of control. In 2021, the program paid out more than $21 million in claims. In the following years, annual costs shot up to $42 million, then $74 million, then $104 million. During the first six months of 2025, payouts totaled $61 million.

On August 1, Minnesota’s Department of Human Services moved to scrap the HSS program, noting that payment to 77 housing-stabilization providers had been terminated this year due to “credible allegations of fraud.” Joe Thompson, then the Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota, went even further, stating that the “vast majority” of the HSS program was fraudulent.

The article concludes:

The first step to solving a problem is acknowledging it. By extension, that means recognizing the problem’s true source. So far, Minnesota’s governing class and its media establishment have failed to take that basic step. Minnesotans will have to confront the uncomfortable but unavoidable reality: members of the Somali community have played a central role in the massive fraud now engulfing the North Star State.
