There have been a number of states that have reacted to the election of Zohran Mamdani as Mayor of New York City and the election in Virginia. Florida is expecting real estate prices to rise. A number of other states are offering refuge for fleeing New York City residents and fleeing Virginia residents. One state has made it clear that they do not want fleeing New York City residents.

(The Center Square) — New Hampshire Gov. Kelly Ayotte is hoping to lure away disaffected New York City business owners chafing over Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani’s victory in Tuesday’s mayoral election.

“We have a message for NYC businesses looking to flee Mayor Mamdani’s higher taxes: Come to New Hampshire,” Ayotte, a first-term Republican, wrote in a flurry of social media posts Wednesday. “Our state is safe, prosperous, and free — what NYC used to be long ago.”

Ayotte also dipped into her unused gubernatorial campaign funds to pay for a billboard truck ad to drive around downtown Manhattan, seeking to lure business owners with a similar pitch.

Texas (being Texas) has taken another approach. According to Click2Houston:

In response to speculation about New Yorkers relocating to Texas after the results of New York City’s mayoral race, Gov. Abbott announced on X on Monday that he would impose a “100% tariff” on anyone moving from the Big Apple after Tuesday’s elections.

There are some real questions as to whether the Governor of Texas can legally do that, but it is an interesting statement. Somehow New Jersey has gotten away with taxing people who move out of the state, so what is the problem with taxing people who move into a state? Also, Mamdani has threatened to tax businesses who leave New York City. Stay tuned, this could get interesting.
