The coop was donated by Carolina Coops, a company based in North Carolina that is known for its “premium” chicken houses and has a large social media following. It was built without taxpayer money, according to a source familiar with the project.

“It’s something I thought was amazing to do for this country,” said Matthew DuBoise, the company’s owner and founder. “It’s a place of history and a place of significance.”

…According to a spokesman, Mr Vance plans to help care for the chickens personally, while his children have already named the newly arrived chicks.

Once fully grown, the hens are expected to provide eggs for the vice-president’s family and others living and working at the Naval Observatory.
