He may call it a fee; he may call it a temporary increase (Massachusetts taxpayers still pay a temporary personal income tax increase passed in 1989); he may call it a surcharge, but Democrats love increasing taxes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.heritage.org\/2011\/11\/08\/obama-couldnt-wait-his-new-christmas-tree-tax\/\">Heritage.org<\/a>\u00a0reported yesterday on President Obama&#8217;s new tax on Christmas trees.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>President Obama\u2019s Agriculture Department today announced that it will impose a new 15-cent charge on all fresh Christmas trees\u2014the Christmas Tree Tax\u2014to support a new Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My first question is, &#8220;Why do we need a federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees?&#8221; Don&#8217;t we already have enough federal programs?<\/p>\n<p>The article at Heritage points out:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Acting Administrator Shipman had the temerity to say the 15-cent mandatory Christmas tree fee \u201cis not a tax nor does it yield revenue for the Federal government\u201d (76 CFR 69102).\u00a0 The Federal government mandates that the Christmas tree sellers pay the 15-cents per tree, whether they want to or not.\u00a0 The Federal government directs that the revenue generated by the 15-cent fee goes to the Board appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture to carry out the Christmas tree program established by the Secretary of Agriculture.\u00a0 Mr. President, that\u2019s a new 15-cent tax to pay for a Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Nobody is saying President Obama doesn\u2019t have authority to impose his new Christmas Tree Tax \u2014 his Administration cites the Commodity Promotion, Research and Information Act of 1996.\u00a0 Just because the Obama Administration has the legal power to impose its Christmas Tree Tax doesn\u2019t mean it should do so.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A tax by any other name&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-pixie\" style=\"margin-top: 10px; height: 15px;\"><a class=\"zemanta-pixie-a\" title=\"Enhanced by Zemanta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zemanta.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-pixie-img\" style=\"border: none; float: right;\" src=\"http:\/\/img.zemanta.com\/zemified_e.png?x-id=79f19183-9b37-4ab3-a39f-246fb1036b23\" alt=\"Enhanced by Zemanta\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Give a Democrat half a chance and he will raise taxes any time he can.
