On Friday, CNBC<\/a> posted an article about a Supreme Court decision that will help ensure election integrity.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

The justices granted the Justice Department\u2019s request to block a judge\u2019s order that had stopped state officials from using Social Security numbers and other information to conduct sweeping checks of the citizenship status of registered voters against federal records.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The court has a 6-3 conservative majority. Its three liberal justices dissented from Friday\u2019s order.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The majority said the plaintiffs\u2019 arguments likely fail because federal law expressly authorizes the Department of Homeland Security to request and receive information relating to citizenship and immigration status from other agencies, including the Social Security Administration.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The administration\u2019s data-sharing arrangement is one in a series of actions boosting the federal government\u2019s involvement in voting ahead of November\u2019s midterm elections in which Trump\u2019s fellow Republicans seek to maintain control of Congress. The U.S. Constitution gives individual states the primary authority to run and administer elections.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Department of Homeland Security last year redesigned a federal database known as the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, \u200bor SAVE, used to verify a person\u2019s citizenship and immigration status. The revamp allowed users to search many records at a time and to conduct searches using individuals\u2019 Social Security numbers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The argument against using the system is that it is an invasion of privacy and that there has not been rampant fraud in our elections. The article claims that charges of massive voter fraud in 2020 are unfounded. I think the Department of Justice might disagree with that statement.<\/p>\n

In a Supreme Court filing, Justice Department lawyers called the \u200bjudge\u2019s order \u201cindefensible,\u201d arguing that it \u201cthreatens the integrity\u201d of the midterm elections.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Texas, which intervened in the case in support of the administration, has disputed claims that the system is unreliable.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Due to separate litigation in Florida, the Trump administration has been able to continue using its modified SAVE system in the Republican-led states of Florida, Iowa, Indiana and Ohio.<\/strong><\/p>\n
