On Monday, The New York Post<\/a> posted an article about a list posted by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on the city Department of Finance webpage identifying hundreds of thousands of entities who could find themselves in the crosshairs of the Mayor Zohran Mamdani-backed tax on luxury second homes.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

The big names spotted by The Post scattered throughout the list included luminaries spanning the worlds of business, politics and the arts \u2014 such as actress and failed New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon<\/a>, a devoted Mamdani supporter.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I wonder if these people had any idea of the consequences of their votes when they voted for him.<\/p>\n

The article concludes:<\/p>\n

Not one but two City Council members appeared on the document, which was only supposed to list non-primary residences, including District 6 Democrat Gale Brewer, who said of her Upper West Side Brownstone, \u201cI\u2019ve been living in [my place] 365 days a year since 1994. So this whole list must be messed up.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Joining Brewer was Council Minority Leader David Carr (R-Staten Island) who called the mayor \u201ca shoo-in for \u2018Realtor of the Year\u2019 in Texas,\u201d referring to a predicted exodus of wealthy New Yorkers to more tax-favorable states.<\/strong><\/p>\n

City Hall did not comment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAs per State law, a property roll was released for public inspection,\u201d said a DOF spokesperson. \u201cFrom this list, DOF will identify properties that may be subject to the new non-primary residence property surcharge.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

One possible consequence of the release of this list is that some of the people on the list may sell their properties and leave New York City. That will negatively impact the tax base, and the Mayor will have to find a new source of revenue for the City. Eventually the Middle Class will wind up paying the taxes that were sold as ‘taxes for the rich’ and not taxes for the rest of us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
