As of now, Sam Page has won the race by 23 votes. Phil Berger is demanding a recount (which he is entitled to). He is, however, required to play by the recount rules.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhaymaker.com\/state-elections-board-denies-berger-special-hand-recount-request\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Daily Haymaker<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Republican state Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) was handed a setback in his election recount efforts Wednesday when the North Carolina State Board of Elections declined to take up his request for an expedited hand-eye recount of 220 ballots.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>The decision comes as Berger seeks to overcome a 23-vote deficit to primary opponent Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page. The request for the hand-eye examination \u2014 meaning visual review by human counters without the use of a machine \u2014 came as part of Berger\u2019s <a class=\"link yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/nc-sen-phil-berger-calls-151453928.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:request for a recount of the race;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;request for a recount of the race&quot;,&quot;yLinkID&quot;:&quot;1hiu5gw14373si0uqle3&quot;}\" data-rapid_p=\"9\" data-v9y=\"1\">request for a recount of the race<\/a> on Tuesday, which remains ongoing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Of the ballots Berger singled out, 217 are undervotes, in which voters appear to have not voted on a ballot item despite casting a ballot, either because they left the section blank or left an unclear marking.
