One reason is to remove a dictator who is a threat to the western hemisphere. Venezuela is hosting a number of terrorists groups and other groups that have a goal of destroying America. They are also a source of drugs that have killed millions of Americans. But there is more to the story.<\/p>\n<p>According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Energy-General\/The-Old-Oil-Case-Behind-Trumps-Venezuela-Threats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oil Price<\/a> website article of December 22:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Trump\u2019s rhetoric aligns closely with unresolved arbitration rulings over Venezuela\u2019s 2007 seizure of U.S. oil assets.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The dispute, long confined to courts and asset seizures, is now being reframed as a matter of U.S. foreign policy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/esg\/conocophillips-prevails-in-8-7-billion-venezuelan-seizure-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg Law<\/a> article from January 23, 2025:<\/p>\n<aside class=\"TheArticleSnapshot_snapshot_1B2M2\" data-test=\"article-snapshot\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>World Bank court dismissed Venezuela\u2019s final appeal on Tuesday<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>US oil explorer praises decision for upholding the rule of law<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/aside>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"QvNnGjy8J7gi ArticleBody_fullArticle_1B2M2\" data-test=\"article-text\">\n<div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Venezuela must pay an $8.7 billion claim to ConocoPhillips stemming from asset seizures during the reign of the late Hugo Chavez after an international court rebuffed the South American nation\u2019s final appeal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>The World Bank\u2019s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes upheld a 2019 ruling in favor of the US oil explorer\u2019s demand for compensation for seizures more than a decade ago, ConocoPhillips announced Thursday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Oil Price article states:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Legal Case Behind the Rhetoric<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>ConocoPhillips pursued international arbitration for years and ultimately won multiple awards. Most recently, in January 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-energy.biz\/nearly-9-billion-win-for-conocophillips-as-venezuela-loses-arbitration-case-over-three-oil-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arbitration rulings were upheld<\/a> totaling approximately $8.7 billion plus interest. Venezuela has consistently refused to pay.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>The U.S. Treasury has authorized ConocoPhillips to <a href=\"https:\/\/newsday.co.tt\/2025\/05\/27\/court-registers-us10b-conocophillips-award-against-venezuela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pursue enforcement actions worldwide<\/a>, including the seizure of Venezuelan assets held abroad. Some assets have been targeted over the years, but full recovery has remained elusive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Trump\u2019s framing of Venezuela as having \u201cstolen\u201d American oil aligns directly with this legal history. While Venezuela claims sovereign authority over its resources, international tribunals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusmedia.com\/en\/news-and-insights\/latest-market-news\/2650418-venezuela-loses-appeal-of-8.5bn-conocophillips-award\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled the expropriation illegal<\/a> under international law. Trump appears to be elevating that unresolved legal judgment into a matter of U.S. foreign policy enforcement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t recommend toppling foreign governments. Historically we have done more harm than good when we have done that. However, the people of Venezuela have been protesting the Chavez and Maduro regimes for a number of years.
