{"id":62121,"date":"2025-12-18T09:55:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T14:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=62121"},"modified":"2025-12-18T09:55:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T14:55:15","slug":"a-veto-that-should-not-have-been-overridden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=62121","title":{"rendered":"A Veto That Should Not Have Been Overridden!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/maryland-legislature-overrides-governors-veto-of-reparations-commission-5959179?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=TheLibertyDaily\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Epoch Times<\/a> posted an article about a decision by the lawmakers in Maryland to override the Governor&#8217;s veto of a law establishing a commission to study reparations for slavery.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Maryland will form a commission to study the possibility of providing reparations for slavery after the state\u2019s legislature reversed Gov. Wes Moore\u2019s veto of enabling legislation on Dec. 16.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Slavery was abolished in the United States in 1865 with the adoption of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It was abolished in Maryland a year prior, in 1864, when the state amended its constitution to outlaw the practice. In 2007, the Maryland General Assembly and the Annapolis City Council <a class=\"article-hover-class\" href=\"https:\/\/msa.maryland.gov\/msa\/intromsa\/pdf\/slavery_pamphlet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued<\/a> official statements expressing \u201cregret for the role Maryland played in instituting and maintaining slavery.\u201d<\/strong><\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Supporters of reparations benefits being paid to descendants of slaves say such benefits are justified because the harms that slavery inflicted on black Americans continue to be felt today, long after the practice was abolished.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Opponents say that no one who is alive today suffered under slavery and that it would be unfair to force Americans who had nothing to do with slavery to pay people who themselves did not experience slavery.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Blacks comprise almost 32 percent of Maryland\u2019s population, the highest percentage in any state outside the Deep South.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Would you also consider reparation for the Irish who came to America as indentured servants, worked for seven years as slaves, then were thrown out into the streets? Slavery was horrible, but it was not unique to America. In fact, Britain and America were the two countries that worked to end slavery.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of wanting to take money from people who had nothing to do with slavery and give it to people who were never slaves, why not put your efforts into ending modern slavery? Slavery exists in today&#8217;s world. It exists in America in the form of human trafficking&#8211;something exacerbated by four years of a porous border under President Biden. Slavery exists in some other countries in the form of forced marriage, child labor, and debt bondage.<\/p>\n<p>In paying reparations, you are asking people to work to earn money to give to someone else who didn&#8217;t work for it.
