The historic rules change could grant the more than 100 civilian nominees who have been blocked from their postings due to Democrats\u2019 persistent delay tactics a swift confirmation vote before the Senate is scheduled to go on recess on Sept. 19.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>&#8230;Thune organized a working group in August after <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/02\/us-news\/trump-tells-schumer-to-go-to-hell-over-senate-nominee-deal-funding-demands-after-negotiations-collapse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">negotiations<\/a> with Democrats to clear the backlog of executive branch nominees collapsed. The cohort included Republican Sens. Katie Britt of Alabama, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Eric Schmitt of Missouri and Ted Budd of North Carolina.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Senate is there to advise and consent&#8211;not to obstruct.<\/p>\n<p>The article notes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Senate Republicans\u2019 imminent rules change comes after former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2013\/11\/harry-reid-nuclear-option-100199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">used<\/a> the \u201cnuclear option\u201d during former President Barack Obama\u2019s second term to lower the threshold required to confirm executive branch and judicial nominees. Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2019\/04\/03\/senate-republicans-trigger-nuclear-option-to-speed-trump-nominees-1253118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">invoked<\/a> the \u201cnuclear option\u201d to eliminate the 60-vote threshold for Supreme Court nominees and cut debate time on most presidential nominees.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Though the proposed rules change is likely to benefit Democrats the next time they control the Senate and the White House, Senate Republicans have argued that Democrats\u2019 nomination blockade is not sustainable. Despite Thune holding more votes than any Senate in 35 years, the Trump administration is on track to confirm the fewest nominees in recent memory.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cBy the end of the 119th Congress (1\/2\/2027), the Senate is on track to confirm just 426 nominees, the fewest in history, and less than half of what other Presidents have averaged since 2000,\u201d Britt, a member of the working group, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenKatieBritt\/status\/1963354642433360208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a> on X on Wednesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is not the kind of history we need to be making.<\/p>\n<p>The article concludes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cWe have never seen a time where the opposition party has literally blocked and forced the president and his team and us here as the majority in the Senate to go through all the machinations of trying to get a nominee across the finish line,\u201d Thune said during <span class=\"il\">a Senate GOP leadership press conference on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cSo this is of the Democrats\u2019 making,\u201d Thune continued. \u201cThere isn\u2019t anything right now that they want to vote for that he has his fingerprints on, and getting his team in place is absolutely essential.
