{"id":59445,"date":"2025-05-16T15:33:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T19:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=59445"},"modified":"2025-05-16T15:33:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T19:33:09","slug":"getting-rid-of-a-really-dumb-car-feature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=59445","title":{"rendered":"Getting Rid Of A Really Dumb Car Feature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/13\/us-news\/epa-chief-lee-zeldin-to-kill-car-feature-everyone-hates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Post<\/a> posted an article about a common-sense decision by Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin hinted Monday that he\u2019s preparing to roll back one car feature that every driver \u201chates.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cStart\/stop technology: where your car dies at every red light so companies get a climate participation trophy,\u201d Zeldin tweeted Monday in a post that has since racked up <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/epaleezeldin\/status\/1921894994769575972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 8 million views<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cEPA approved it, and everyone hates it, so we\u2019re fixing it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>The feature kills internal combustion engines at red lights and has been touted by proponents for being able to conserve fuel and cut down on pollution.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Critics have questioned whether the feature can wear down the car\u2019s battery or engine more quickly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>The \u201coff-cycle CO2 reducing\u201d tech has its origins in a federal rule proposed under President Barack Obama in 2012 \u2014 but didn\u2019t take effect until new fuel economy standards to reduce greenhouse gas emissions five years later.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Between 2012 and 2021, the number of vehicles produced with a stop-start feature due to the carbon credits surged from 1% to 45%.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Up to 65% of vehicles had the technology included in new models by 2023.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For those of us who grew up driving clunkers while in high school, this feature is nerve wracking. The carburetor in my 1954 Lincoln used to jam causing the engine to stall. This often happened at stop lights. When my husband&#8217;s car shuts off at stop lights, it brings back really bad memories. There were times when we shoved a board into the engine to unstick whatever it was that stuck!
