On Sunday, The New York Post<\/a> posted an article about some of the donation sites collecting money for the victims of the California wildfires. When you donate to anything, be sure to read the fine print.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

California Gov. Gavin Newsom sparked fierce outrage for soliciting donations to victims of the deadly Los Angeles wildfires via his super PAC, which pushed users to add their personal information to a Democratic fundraising site.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Newsom, 57, posted a link on X to\u00a0californiafirefacts.com<\/a>, a website set up by his campaign committee, in response to what he claimed was misinformation\u00a0on the wildfires.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But the site urges users to give money to the California Fire Foundation and links them to a module from ActBlue, the Democratic Party\u2019s fundraising platform. The ActBlue donation box says the money is being raised by Campaign for Democracy, Newsom\u2019s super PAC.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

…The California Fire Foundation, which helps firefighters, their families and victims, allows users to donate<\/a>\u00a0directly without relying on a service like ActBlue to make those transactions.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Users who donate via Newsom\u2019s fundraising appeal are also automatically signing up for text messages from his super PAC, if they provide their phone numbers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

ActBlue isn’t doing this for nothing:<\/p>\n

Observers online also quickly pointed out that ActBlue takes a portion of all donations as a processing fee.\u00a0ActBlue claims<\/a>\u00a0to \u201ccharge a flat rate of 3.95% on each donation\u201d to \u201ccover the processing cost.\u201d The Post has contacted ActBlue for comment.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNewsom\u2026.never let a\u00a0fundraising\u00a0opportunity go to waste,\u201d user Andrew Laing\u00a0<\/strong>wrote on X.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n
