On Thursday, The Catholic News Agency<\/a> reported that Medical Assistance In Dying (MAID) accounted for 1 in 20 deaths in Canada last year.<\/p>\n

Government statistics\u00a0indicated<\/a>\u00a0that 15,343 people were euthanized by medical officials in Canada in 2023, out of a total of just under 20,000 requests. Those numbers represent \u201can increase of 15.8%\u201d over 2022, the report says, a drop from an average annual growth rate of about 31%.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Though the growth rate declined, it is \u201cnot yet possible to make reliable conclusions about whether or not these findings represent a stabilization of growth rates over the longer term,\u201d the report said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAn increased awareness of MAID within the care continuum, population aging, and the associated patterns of illness or disease, personal beliefs, and societal acceptance, as well as the availability of practitioners who provide MAID, may all influence the rate of provisions,\u201d it noted.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u201cvast majority\u201d of euthanasia incidents detailed in the most recent report, about 95%, were administered to individuals classified as \u201cTrack 1,\u201d whose natural death is \u201creasonably foreseeable\u201d due to a medical condition.<\/strong><\/p>\n

More than half of those individuals were over 75 years old, with cancer as the \u201cmost frequently reported underlying medical condition.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Concerns have been raised recently that regulators are not effectively policing the country\u2019s euthanasia program.\u00a0A bombshell report in November<\/a>\u00a0alleged that out of hundreds of violations of the country\u2019s controversial euthanasia law\u00a0over the course of\u00a0several years, none of them had been reported to law enforcement.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Activists, meanwhile, are pushing for the government to expand the law to\u00a0cover individuals with mental illnesses.<\/a>\u00a0The government recently considered making that expansion itself, though early this year it\u00a0paused the measure<\/a>\u00a0to allow the country\u2019s health care system \u201cmore time\u201d to prepare for it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is concerning. I understand that people suffering look for a way out, but the devaluing of life that is euthanasia cannot be ignored. This is a slippery slope that we do not want to go down.
