On December 16th, The New York Post<\/a> posted an article about a CNN story about a prisoner released from jail in Syria. The Syrian regime was knows for its horrific prisons and its brutal treatment of prisoners.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

The prisoner CNN helped free from a secret facility in Syria was actually a notorious member of Bashar al-Assad\u2019s forces known to torture those who refused to pay him off, according to a shocking local fact check.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The network went viral last week with footage of the startled prisoner being led from the prison by journalist Clarissa Ward, who called it <\/a>\u201cone of the most extraordinary moments I have witnessed\u201d in her 20 years of reporting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But \u201cindependent and unbiased\u201d fact-checkers Verify-Sy published a detailed report Sunday saying that the seemingly innocent prisoner was actually Salama Mohammad Salama \u2014 a first lieutenant in Syrian air force intelligence with a long history of alleged war crimes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have subsequently been investigating his background and are aware that he may have given a false identity,\u201d CNN acknowledged to The Post. \u201cWe are continuing our reporting into this and the wider story.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

…Known as \u201cAbu Hamza,\u201d Salama worked at several security checkpoints in Homs and was involved in theft, extortion and coercing residents into becoming informants for Assad, local residents told the fact-checkers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He also killed civilians during the Syrian civil war in 2014 \u2014 and allegedly detained and tortured young men on bogus charges, many of whom refused to pay bribes, Verify-Sy reported.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Locals claim he was locked up in the prison where he was discovered for less than a month due to a dispute with a high-ranking officer over sharing the extorted money.<\/strong><\/p>\n
