{"id":55788,"date":"2024-07-23T07:05:46","date_gmt":"2024-07-23T11:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=55788"},"modified":"2024-07-23T07:05:46","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T11:05:46","slug":"sometimes-it-pays-not-to-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=55788","title":{"rendered":"Sometimes It Pays Not To Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This article is from July 19th, so I am sure most of the problems mentioned have been corrected by now, but I love the irony.<\/p>\n<p>On July 19th, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/southwest-cloudstrike-windows-3-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Trends<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Nearly every flight in the U.S. is grounded right now following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/fix-deployed-says-firm-at-center-of-global-it-outage\/\">a CrowdStrike system update<\/a> error that\u2019s affecting everything from travel to mobile ordering at Starbucks \u2014 but not Southwest Airlines flights. Southwest is still flying high, unaffected by the outage that\u2019s plaguing the world today, and that\u2019s apparently because it\u2019s using Windows 3.1.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Yes, Windows 3.1 \u2014 an operating system that is 32 years old. Southwest, along with UPS and FedEx, haven\u2019t had any issues with the CrowdStrike outage. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/19\/business\/delta-american-airlines-flights-outage-intl-hnk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responses to CNN<\/a>, Delta, American, Spirit, Frontier, United, and Allegiant all said they were having issues, but Southwest told the outlet that its operations are going off without a hitch.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dalmaer\/status\/1814331722072256590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Some are attributing<\/a> that to Windows 3.1. Major portions of Southwest\u2019s systems <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/hershshefrin\/2022\/12\/31\/can-southwest-airlines-fix-its-systemic-weaknesses-in-the-new-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are reportedly built<\/a> on Windows 95 and Windows 3.1, which is something the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/airlines\/2022\/12\/30\/whats-the-problem-with-southwest-airlines-scheduling-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has come under fire for<\/a> in the past several years. It should go without saying that Southwest needs to update its system, but in this case, the ancient operating system seems to be doing the airline some favors to avoid a complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/y2k-caught-up-to-use-24-year-later-crowdstrike\/\">Y2K-level apocalypse<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Computers are either wonderful or awful.
