Republicans in North Carolina have advanced legislation to outlaw sanctuary jurisdictions, requiring law enforcement to cooperate in turning over criminal illegal aliens to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the state Senate\u2019s Judiciary Committee\u00a0approved<\/a>\u00a0a bill that will require North Carolina police departments and sheriff\u2019s offices to cooperate with ICE agents when they are trying to take custody of a criminal illegal alien.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With their supermajorities in the state House and Senate, Republicans are expected to approve the bill and override Gov. Roy Cooper\u2019s (D) expected veto.\u00a0In 2022, the state House and Senate\u00a0passed<\/a>\u00a0the legislation and sent it to Cooper\u2019s desk, but he vetoed the bill.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The bill, if approved, would ensure that North Carolina\u2019s sanctuary jurisdictions \u2014\u00a0Buncombe County, Durham County, Forsyth County, Mecklenburg County, Orange County, and Wake County \u2014 can no longer shield criminal illegal aliens in their custody from immigration enforcement by refusing to turn them over to ICE agents.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite its reputation as a red-leaning swing state, North Carolina is home to some of the nation\u2019s most prominent sanctuary jurisdictions. In 2022, the Immigration Reform Law Institute\u00a0named<\/a>\u00a0Wake County as one of the most dangerous sanctuary jurisdictions in the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n

…A vote in the state Senate on the bill is expected<\/a>\u00a0this week. The bill was already approved last year by the state House.<\/strong><\/p>\n

People who are here illegally and commit crimes need to be deported. It is no secret that many of the countries sending people here to cross the border illegally are not sending their best.
