On Monday, John Droz posted an article in substack<\/a> about the latest unemployment numbers.<\/p>\n

The article notes:<\/p>\n

Believe it or not (as this\u00a0superb article<\/a>\u00a0explains), there are now\u00a0SIX different US unemployment rates!<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Here are the\u00a0latest (2023) government data<\/a>\u00a0for all six. The popularly referred to rates are\u00a03.6%<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(U-3: unemployed) and\u00a06.9%<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(U-6: out of work).<\/p>\n

However, there is another large fly in the ointment:\u00a0the unemployment rates (by-and-large) do not count illegal immigrants<\/strong><\/span>. When that number was low, it was ignored, as it was considered to be just statistical noise. Since 2020, that is no longer the case, as the current data says some\u00a0six (6) million<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0new illegal immigrants are in the US, just from the Southern border!<\/p>\n

The article includes a spoof of Abbott and Costello’s Who’s On First routine. Here is a portion of that spoof:<\/p>\n

COSTELLO:\u00a0<\/strong>I want to talk about the unemployment rate in America.
\nABBOTT:\u00a0<\/strong>Good Subject. It’s\u00a03.6%.<\/strong><\/p>\n

COSTELLO:\u00a0<\/strong>That many people are out of work?\u00a0
\nABBOTT:\u00a0<\/strong>No, that’s\u00a06.9%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

COSTELLO:\u00a0<\/strong>You just said\u00a03.6%.
\nABBOTT: 3.6%\u00a0<\/strong>are\u00a0unemployed.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

COSTELLO:\u00a0<\/strong>Right,\u00a03.6% out of work.
\nABBOTT:<\/strong>\u00a0No, that’s\u00a06.9%.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

COSTELLO:\u00a0<\/strong>Okay, so it’s\u00a06.9% unemployed.
\nABBOTT:\u00a0<\/strong>No, that’s\u00a03.6%.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

COSTELLO: WAIT A MINUTE.\u00a0<\/strong>Is it\u00a03.6%\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a06.9%?
\nABBOTT: 3.6%\u00a0<\/strong>are\u00a0unemployed. 6.9%\u00a0<\/strong>are\u00a0out of work.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

COSTELLO:\u00a0<\/strong>But if you are out of work, you are unemployed.\u00a0
\nABBOTT:\u00a0<\/strong>No, Biden said you can’t count those\u00a0“Out of Work”\u00a0<\/strong>as the unemployed. You have to be looking for work to be unemployed.<\/p>\n

COSTELLO:\u00a0<\/strong>BUT THEY ARE OUT OF WORK!!!<\/strong><\/em>
\nABBOTT:\u00a0<\/strong>No, you miss his point.<\/p>\n

COSTELLO:\u00a0<\/strong>What point?
\nABBOTT:\u00a0<\/strong>Someone who isn\u2019t actively looking for work can’t be counted with those who look for work.\u00a0It wouldn’t be fair.<\/em><\/p>\n

COSTELLO:\u00a0<\/strong>It wouldn\u2019t be fair to whom?\u00a0
\nABBOTT:\u00a0<\/strong>The\u00a0unemployed.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

COSTELLO:\u00a0<\/strong>But they are ALL out of work.\u00a0
\nABBOTT:\u00a0<\/strong>No, the\u00a0Unemployed<\/strong>\u00a0are actively looking for work. Those who are\u00a0Out of Work<\/strong>\u00a0gave up looking. If you give up, you are no longer in the ranks of the Unemployed.<\/p>\n

COSTELLO:\u00a0<\/strong>So if you’re off the Unemployment roles that would count as less Unemployment?\u00a0
\nABBOTT:\u00a0<\/strong>Yes, unemployment would go down.<\/p>\n
