The upcoming United Nations (UN) climate conference in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), known as COP28, appears likely to have a larger carbon footprint than any previous UN climate change summit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

More than 70,000 people are\u00a0expected<\/a>\u00a0to show up to COP28, about 25,000 more people than last year\u2019s summit,\u00a0COP27<\/a>. The conference, which runs from Nov. 30 through Dec. 12, will focus on global strategies to reduce emissions and accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels in favor of green energy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

About 40,000 people\u00a0attended<\/a> COP26 in 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland,\u00a0\u00a0while nearly 45,000 people\u00a0attended<\/a>\u00a0the 2015 summit in Paris, France, where the Paris Climate Accords were signed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Conference attendees have drawn\u00a0scrutiny<\/a>\u00a0in previous years for traveling to and from the event in private jets while lecturing on the importance of reducing emissions. Notably, a\u00a0luxury<\/a>\u00a0concierge service has been offering to arrange private jet charters ahead of this year\u2019s conference.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition to flying in and out of the UAE, many attendees will also stay in high-end\u00a0hotels<\/a>\u00a0and have\u00a0access<\/a>\u00a0to \u201cenvironmentally sustainable, socially responsible, delicious and nutritious food and beverage,\u201d according to COP28\u2019s website.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the key issues to be discussed at COP28 is the shape\u00a0of a so-called \u201closs and damages\u201d fund, a de facto international\u00a0climate reparations<\/a>\u00a0program. Special presidential envoy for climate John Kerry recently suggested that the U.S. will pay \u201cmillions<\/a>\u201d into the fund, a number that many activists and representatives of poorer countries find to be inadequate. China is unlikely to have any significant obligations to the fund because it is classified as a\u00a0developing country<\/a>, despite its status as the world\u2019s\u00a0top<\/a>\u00a0emitter and\u00a0second-largest<\/a>\u00a0economy.<\/strong><\/p>\n
