{"id":52026,"date":"2023-09-19T13:16:57","date_gmt":"2023-09-19T17:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=52026"},"modified":"2023-09-19T13:16:57","modified_gmt":"2023-09-19T17:16:57","slug":"why-your-child-cant-read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=52026","title":{"rendered":"Why Your Child Can&#8217;t Read"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Sunday, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/09\/17\/columbia-quietly-closes-down-teachers-college-project-that-ruined-countless-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Post<\/a> posted an article about Columbia University closing down its Teachers College Reading and Writing Project.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Just before the Labor Day weekend, <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/columbia-university-dissolves-program-behind-literacy-curriculum-used-in-nyc-public-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Columbia announced<\/a> that it\u2019s \u201cdissolving\u201d the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project and sending its creator, Lucy Calkins, off on indefinite sabbatical.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>For decades, Calkins and her colleagues pushed \u201cliteracy\u201d programs based on ideology, not science, programs that failed the children who most needed help.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Her \u201cbalanced literacy\u201d approach gave short shrift to phonics \u2014 by teaching children to look at pictures and guess words, for example, instead of sounding them out \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/06\/01\/expert-idiocy-on-teaching-kids-to-read-is-beyond-comprehension\/\">failed to foster<\/a> the building of knowledge and vocabulary vital to learning the love of reading.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Phonics may be old-fashioned, but it is the only way a child can read an unfamiliar word. When my children were little, we watched Sesame Street together. I loved the sections they did on phonics.<\/p>\n<p>Phonics matters. I have three children. Two of them learned to read in Massachusetts, and one learned to read in Rhode Island. Massachusetts taught phonics (they used blow-up &#8216;letter people&#8217; which were wonderful&#8211;Mr. O was <b>obstreperous<\/b>), and Rhode Island taught &#8216;see and say&#8217; or sight words. It wasn&#8217;t until college that the child who had not been taught phonics caught up with the other two on learning to read well and to love reading.<\/p>\n<p>The article notes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Columbia\u2019s decision comes months after <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/05\/10\/with-phonics-win-banks-proves-himself-the-champion-nyc-kids-need\/\">Chancellor David Banks pulled the plug<\/a> on the Calkins-friendly approach once used by nearly half of NYC public schools.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Indeed, the drive toward \u201cevidence-based\u201d instruction has seen districts across the nation reject the Teachers College approach.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>So Columbia\u2019s move is essentially just recognizing reality.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Definitely a step in the right direction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Sunday, The New York Post posted an article about Columbia University closing down its Teachers College Reading and Writing Project.
