CNS News<\/a>\u00a0is reporting today that the Health and Human Services Department has announced that it plans to spend\u00a0$700 million building, expanding, and improving community health centers across the U.S.<\/p>\n

The funding will also expand the\u00a0infrastructure for Obamacare.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor many Americans, community health centers are the major source of care that ranges from prevention to treatment,\u201d said HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. \u201cThese funds will expand our ability to provide high-quality care to millions of people while supporting good paying jobs in communities across the country.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

Most of the taxpayer money — $600 million \u2013 will be spent on existing health centers for longer-term projects including facility expansion and hiring more employees to serve more patients. The remainder, around $100 million, will be spent on shorter-term projects addressing \u201cimmediate facility needs.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The $700 million announced on Friday is just the beginning: Over the next five years, the Affordable Care Act provides $11 billion in funding for the operation, expansion and construction of community health centers across the country.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2010, community health centers employed more than 131,000 staff, including 9,600 physicians, 6,400 nurse practitioners, physicians\u2019 assistants, and certified nurse midwives, 11,400 nurses, 9,500 dental staff, 4,200 behavioral health staff, and more than 12,000 case managers and health education, outreach, and transportation staff.\u00a0 The centers currently serve nearly 20 million patients regardless of their ability to pay.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is a good thing to provide medical care to people who may not be able to afford it. I agree with the concept. I just wonder if there is not a much more economical way to do it. The $700 million announced today is truly spending we cannot currently afford. Let’s look at places we can cut in order to provide these services. I am sure we can find some.<\/div>\n
