Evidently I was not the only one concerned about this move.<\/p>\n<p>On April 12, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/04\/12\/walter-reed-military-hospital-reviewing-contract-for-chaplain-services-after-ordering-off-catholic-priests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Daily Caller<\/a> reported the following:<\/p>\n<aside id=\"right1forarticles\">\n<div class=\"adcontainer mb-8\">\n<div id=\"dailycaller_rail_right\" class=\"ad\" align=\"center\" data-freestar-ad=\"__300x600\" data-google-query-id=\"CPLLuLrep_4CFUXvswodHgUCdw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/10519169\/dailycaller_rail_right_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<div id=\"ob-read-more-selector\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>The Pentagon\u2019s health agency said Tuesday it is reviewing a contract for chaplaincy services at Walter Reed Military Medical Center after facing backlash for sending a \u201ccease and desist\u201d letter to the Franciscan Friars at Holy Name College Friary in Silver Spring, Maryland, according to the Washington Times.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>The Defense Health Agency (DHA) <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/04\/09\/walter-reed-cancels-catholic-contract-before-easter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">terminated<\/a> a 20-year relationship with the Friars on March 31, just <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/04\/19\/media-religious-imagery-holy-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">before<\/a> Easter Sunday, instead awarding a contract to a private firm that Catholic authorities say cannot provide chaplain services according to their religious tradition, because chaplains must work for a bishop, not a private company.\u00a0 Congressional Republicans sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/_cache\/files\/16d996e9-c976-4f77-8738-63861153367b\/82EACF34C6448D709CBD7F9656497454.04.11.23-rubio-letter-to-secdef-re-walter-reed-003-.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a> Tuesday to DHA calling the decision \u201cunconscionable,\u201d prompting a promise from Walter Reed to reevaluate the contract, the Washington Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2023\/apr\/11\/walter-reed-reviewing-disputed-catholic-chaplaincy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>The contract \u201cis under review to ensure it adequately supports the religious needs of our patients and beneficiaries,\u201d Walter Reed told the outlet in a statement Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article notes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Senate and House GOP lawmakers, led by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, said Mack Global LLC, the secular professional services company receiving the contract, lacks the ability to provide appropriate religious services to veterans and service members. Allowing Mack Global to proceed with the contract \u201cdeny service members and veterans the rights and abilities to practice their religion and participate in certain practices such as pastoral care and the sacraments which can only be carried out by an ordained Catholic priest,\u201d the letter stated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was an attack on the religious freedom of the military members who were at Walter Reed Hospital.
