On Tuesday, Breitbart<\/a> reported the following:<\/p>\n Republican South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem\u2019s efforts to block China from buying up farmland in her state were thwarted this week when a supermajority of state Senators rejected her proposal.<\/strong><\/p>\n As Breitbart News previously reported<\/a>, Noem had proposed a bill that would \u201ccreate a state-level version of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS)\u201d in order to curtail foreign Chinese entities from buying agricultural land in her state:<\/strong><\/p>\n Currently, CFIUS is a federal board that approves or disapproves of foreign entities engaging in major U.S. transactions. Noem\u2019s proposal would establish a CFIUS-South Dakota, or CFIUS-SD, which would review proposed transactions in the state where foreign entities including but not limited to Chinese entities seek to purchase land. The board, if established \u2014 which would require the legislature to pass Noem\u2019s proposal \u2014 could block such land sales as it sees fit.<\/strong><\/p>\n Essentially, Senate Bill 185 would have granted the South Dakota governor the power to unilaterally veto any purchase reviewed by the panel. The state senate rejected the bill on Tuesday with an 11-23 vote.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThe bill faced\u00a0opposition<\/a>\u00a0from nearly every agriculture industry group in committee testimony. But the proposal\u2019s supporters on the Senate floor said any flaws would be rectified before it becomes law,\u201d reported<\/a> South Dakota Public Broadcasting (SDPB).<\/strong><\/p>\n The article concludes:<\/p>\n \u201cWhat\u2019s been interesting about the debate so far on this bill I\u2019m proposing with help from a couple legislators,\u201d she continued, \u201cis that the opposition has not come to the table and given us other solutions and other things they think would work that would give us this kind of accountability and make sure that we have a review of land that\u2019s purchased in South Dakota. They haven\u2019t given us articulated reasons as to why they\u2019re opposed to the bill, so for me, this is an issue the public has brought to me for many, many months. They care about this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Opposition to this bill makes no sense–letting a country that seeks to defeat us control the land that supplies our food is insanity. Controlling the food supply controls the population.
