This proposal illustrates one of many reasons we should defund the Department of Education.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>The Department of Education (DOE) announced a proposal Tuesday rescinding a Trump-era policy that prohibited universities from receiving federal funding if they restricted religious student group activities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>The 2020 policy, initially signed by former President Donald Trump as part of an executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highereddive.com\/news\/trump-signs-executive-order-tying-research-funds-to-campus-free-speech\/551033\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">order<\/a> in 2019, was proposed to prevent universities from censoring the speech of religious students on campus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/courts_law\/new-trump-rule-ties-college-funding-to-speech-faith-rights\/2020\/09\/09\/175be846-f2e8-11ea-8025-5d3489768ac8_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to the Washington Post. The DEO\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ed.gov\/2023\/02\/update-on-the-free-inquiry-rule-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announcement<\/a> indicates that President Joe Biden is looking to end the policy, claiming the protections caused an \u201cunduly burdensome role\u201d for the department.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201c[T]he Department believes it is not necessary in order to protect the First Amendment right to free speech and free exercise of religion given existing legal protections, it has caused confusion about schools\u2019 nondiscrimination requirements, and it prescribed a novel and unduly burdensome role for the Department in investigating allegations regarding public institutions\u2019 treatment of religious student organizations,\u201d the announcement read. \u201cWe have not seen evidence that the regulation has provided meaningfully increased protection for religious student organizations beyond the robust First Amendment protections that already exist, much less that it has been necessary to ensure they are able to organize and operate on campus.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Free speech on college campuses has never been one of the political left&#8217;s favorite things. How many times have conservative speakers been shut down?<\/p>\n<p>Here is the good news:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The public comment phase will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 22, and remain open for 30 days for anyone to comment and provide their thoughts on the proposal, according to the announcement.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please go to the Department of Education website and voice your opposition to this change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, The Daily Caller posted an article about a new Department of Education (DOE) proposal.
