On Tuesday, Hot Air<\/a> posted an article reporting that Oak Park and River Forest High School is transforming its grading systems. The school is bringing equity into its grading system.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

School board members discussed the plan called \u201cTransformative Education Professional Development & Grading\u201d at a meeting on May 26, presented by Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning Laurie Fiorenza\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTraditional grading practices perpetuate inequities and intensify the opportunity gap,\u201d\u00a0reads a slide in the PowerPoint deck outlining its rationale and goals<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It calls for what OPRF leaders describe as \u201ccompetency-based grading, eliminating zeros from the grade book\u2026encouraging and rewarding growth over time.\u201d\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sullivan calls grading based on traditional classroom testing and homework performance \u201coutdated practices\u201d and foster \u201cunconscious biases.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTeachers may unintentionally let non-academic factors\u2014like student behavior or whether a student showed up to virtual class\u2014interfere with their final evaluation of students.,\u201d she said. \u201cTraditional student grades include non-academic criteria that do not reflect student learning gains\u2014including participation and on-time homework submission.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

So now students will get credit for simply showing up for class.<\/p>\n
