{"id":42416,"date":"2021-06-20T11:14:35","date_gmt":"2021-06-20T15:14:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=42416"},"modified":"2021-06-20T11:14:35","modified_gmt":"2021-06-20T15:14:35","slug":"doing-the-right-thing-even-if-it-is-years-late","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=42416","title":{"rendered":"Doing The Right Thing (Even If It Is Years Late)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9703943\/California-spend-500-million-33-million-acres-forests-help-prevent-wildfires.html?ito=facebook_share_article-facebook_preferred-top&amp;fbclid=IwAR26RqXzozonl7lrwENLRGgiJIhYi7sRlpD1Xuj17XfFkZq_LZj8_ef2h0U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The U.K. Daily Mail<\/a> posted an article about California&#8217;s plan to deal with forest fires.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><a id=\"mol-61c09150-d124-11eb-ac8b-67261c5a0067\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/california\/index.html\"><strong>California<\/strong><\/a><strong> is adopting former <a id=\"mol-61af7a50-d124-11eb-ac8b-67261c5a0067\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/donald_trump\/index.html\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s plan to thin out the state&#8217;s 33 million acres of forests with controlled burns and raking the woodland floor &#8211; after state officials essentially laughed off the former president&#8217;s idea a few years ago.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Trump had suggested in 2018 that the Golden State start sweeping its forest floors of debris that often aids in the spread of wildfires.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>But by Aug. 2020, at the peak of the state&#8217;s wildfire season, his suggestion became an ultimatum when he withheld wildfire financial aid on the basis of California&#8217;s failure to clear its forests of dead trees, branches and leaves,\u00a0<a class=\"class\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/states\/california\/story\/2020\/08\/20\/trump-blames-california-for-wildfires-tells-state-you-gotta-clean-your-floors-1311059\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Politico<\/a>\u00a0reported at the time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The frustrating part of this is that if the plan had been adopted in 2018 when it was suggested or even a year later, how many acres of forest (and homes) would have been spared? Instead, because President Trump suggested it while he was President, it wasn&#8217;t done until after he left office (so he couldn&#8217;t be given credit for it).<\/p>\n<p>The article notes:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>During the 2020 California wildfires, 31 people died and another 37 suffered non-fatal injuries due to 9,639 fires spread across the Golden State, according to the website <a class=\"class\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fire.ca.gov\/incidents\/2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">Cal Fire<\/a>, which tracks wildfires throughout the state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Then-President Trump continuously blamed the Democrat-dominated state for not doing enough to prevent the widespread wildfires in 2018 and 2019 during his presidency, while threatening to withhold relief funds as environmentally-conscious Californians balked at his ideas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>&#8216;I\u2019ve been telling them this now for three years, but they don\u2019t want to listen,&#8217; Trump said at the August rally. &#8216;The environment, the environment,&#8217; but they have massive fires again.&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At some point we have to learn to do the right thing regardless of who gets the credit!<\/p>\n<p>There are, however, still some naysayers:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>However, conservation director for Los Padres ForestWatch\u00a0Bryant Baker warns that these kinds of controlled burns threaten the native plant areas of Southern California\u2019s national forests.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>&#8216;There are issues with just assuming this is some sort silver bullet in changing overall fires in the state,&#8217; Baker said. &#8216;Prescribed fire is not going to be the thing that stops very large wind-driven fires that are occurring.&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Gov. Newsom is already asking the state&#8217;s legislature to give him $2 billion more in an effort to accelerate the forest thinning process in the fiscal year starting July 1, according to Bloomberg.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>&#8216;Wildfires don\u2019t stop at jurisdictional boundaries. As we respond to wildfires in real-time this summer, improving coordination between the major stewards of California\u2019s forested land will help us protect communities and restore forest health across California,&#8217; Newsom said in a statement obtained by Politico.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sorry that the controlled burns threaten the native plant areas, but somehow I don&#8217;t think the native plant areas have done too well in the recent wild fires.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday The U.K. Daily Mail posted an article about California&#8217;s plan to deal with forest fires.
