On May 3rd, The Bulletin<\/a> (an Oregon newspaper) reported the following:<\/p>\n

A Bend Police Department officer will be investigated for allegedly violating policy by wearing a keychain connected to a far-right group while in uniform on Saturday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bend Chief Mike Krantz did not identify the employee, though Cpl. Josh Spano is the officer seen in a photograph circulating on Reddit and Facebook. Attached to the front of Spano\u2019s service vest is an item reading \u201cmolon labe\u201d in Greek lettering, a phrase associated with the far-right Three Percenters militia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The \u201cmolon labe\u201d item and its letters appear to be larger than Spano\u2019s name tag on his vest.<\/strong><\/p>\n

First of all, “molon labe” translates as “come and take [them].” The expression is used in reference to the government attempting to take guns away from citizens who have a lawful right to own them. Secondly, the Three Percenters is neither far-right or a militia group.<\/p>\n

According to a 2018 article in USA Today<\/a>:<\/p>\n

It’s a diffuse, bottom-up militia, according to\u00a0a Politico\u00a0<\/em>profile<\/a>, with the group itself claiming inspiration from the “rough estimate<\/a>” that only 3% of American\u00a0colonists took up arms against the British forces. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, calls Three Percenters an\u00a0“anti-government” group with chapters claimed nationwide.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

A statement explaining the movement<\/a>\u00a0claims it’s “not\u00a0a militia” and “not anti-government,” but exists to “to reign in an overreaching government and push back against tyranny.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Again, there is no militia made up of Three Percenters. I would not consider Politco an objective source.\u00a0 I am afraid we have reached the point where supporting the Second Amendment makes you far-right.<\/p>\n

The officer was wearing a keychain attached to his service vest with the slogan on it. I suppose that might be enough to investigate him, but this seems like more of the cancel culture to me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
