Yesterday Just the News<\/a> reported that on Tuesday night the Democrats passed a gradual $15 minimum wage hike in a committee vote.<\/p>\n

The increase\u00a0from $7.25 an hour was part of the House Education and Labor Committee’s budget reconciliation markup for President Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus plan. In the legislation, the minimum wage would reach $15 in 2025.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The language of the Raise the Wage Act was incorporated into the $170 billion COVID-19\u00a0stimulus funding legislation for public schools during the virtual committee markup<\/a> that began late in the afternoon on\u00a0Tuesday. The vote on the legislation was\u00a027-21 along party lines.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Democrats admit that the only way to get this through in by the budget reconciliation process:<\/p>\n

Senate Budget Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders told reporters on Wednesday that Democrats are including the gradual $15 minimum wage hike in Biden’s stimulus plan because they do not have 60 votes in the Senate to pass it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“We’re not going to\u00a0get the 60 votes we need and\u00a0the only way we’re going to\u00a0do it with\u00a050 votes is through\u00a0reconciliation,” he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The use of budget reconciliation allows Democrats to pass Biden’s stimulus plan without GOP votes in the Senate.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office<\/a> recently projected\u00a0that a gradual\u00a0$15 minimum wage in\u00a0Biden’s\u00a0$1.9 trillion COVID relief package would result\u00a0in 1.4 million workers losing their jobs.<\/strong><\/p>\n
