House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rules Committee Chairman James McGovern (D-MA) unveiled the rules for the 117th Congress on Friday, which contain \u201cfuture-focused\u201d proposals, including the elimination of gendered terms, such as \u201cfather, mother, son, and daughter.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis package, which will be introduced and voted on once the new Congress convenes, includes sweeping ethics reforms, increases accountability for the American people, and makes this House of Representatives the most inclusive in history,\u201d said the House Committee on Rules in a statement<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Within the proposals are the creation of the \u201cSelect Committee on Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth,\u201d which would require Congress to \u201chonor all\u00a0gender identities by changing pronouns and familial relationships in the House rules to be gender neutral.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In clause\u00a08(c)(3) of rule XXIII<\/a>, gendered terms, such as \u201cfather, mother, son, daughter,\u00a0brother, sister, uncle, aunt, first cousin, nephew, niece, husband, wife, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, stepfather, stepmother, stepson, stepdaughter, stepbrother, stepsister, half brother, half sister, grandson, or granddaughter\u201d will be removed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In their place, terms such as \u201cparent, child, sibling, parent\u2019s sibling, first cousin, sibling\u2019s child, spouse, parent-in-law, child-in-law, sibling-in-law, stepparent, stepchild, stepsibling, half-sibling, or grandchild\u201d will be used, instead.<\/strong><\/p>\n
