Yesterday The Daily Wire<\/a> reported that Newsweek was forced to issue a retraction of statements it made about possible Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. The attack on Judge Barrett was probably only a portent of things to come. It was a lie, but that won’t matter to many people who want to oppose her nomination because of her stand on abortion.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

Newsweek magazine has issued a major correction to an article smearing potential Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, accusing the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals judge of belonging to a Catholic sect that \u201cinspired\u201d the novel \u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Initially, Newsweek claimed that \u201cPeople of Praise<\/a>,\u201d a charismatic Catholic group to which Barrett reportedly belongs, \u201cserved as inspiration for Margaret Atwood\u2019s dystopian novel, The Handmaid\u2019s Tale,\u201d adding that female members are forced to report to spiritual superiors known as \u201chandmaids\u201d and that the group stresses that \u201cmen have authority over their wives.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The article continues:<\/p>\n

The problem? People of Praise\u2019s \u201chandmaids\u201d are little more than spiritual advisors, according to sources familiar with the 1,700-member group that spoke to The Daily Wire. And as National Review Online\u2019s David Harsanyi<\/a> points out, Barrett\u2019s partner\u2019s \u201cauthority\u201d must be severely limited, given that her \u201cknuckle-dragging misogynistic religious fanatic husband has only let the poor woman out of the house twice. Once, to serve a 15-year stint as a law professor at a highly prestigious university,\u201d and the other to serve on the 7th Circuit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Deeper than that, though, it turns out Newsweek\u2019s story is actually completely wrong based on information from Atwood herself, which Newsweek points out in its \u201ccorrection.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The article notes that the author has also stated that the group was not the inspiration for the book:<\/p>\n

\u201cCorrection: This article\u2019s headline originally stated that People of Praise inspired \u2018The Handmaid\u2019s Tale\u2019. The book\u2019s author, Margaret Atwood, has never specifically mentioned the group as being the inspiration for her work,\u201d the note read. \u201cA New Yorker profile of the author from 2017 mentions a newspaper clipping as part of her research for the book of a different charismatic Catholic group, People of Hope. Newsweek regrets the error.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe clipping includes a spokesperson for the People of Hope sect based in Newark, New Jersey saying, \u2018We\u2019re all Roman Catholics. We differ in the sense that we are a Charismatic group, which would mean that we have prayer meetings, during which there is raising of hands, singing and speaking in tongues,’\u201d the outlet notes. \u201cPeople of Praise has never had a presence in the state of New Jersey.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
