{"id":39332,"date":"2020-07-12T20:12:29","date_gmt":"2020-07-13T00:12:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=39332"},"modified":"2020-07-12T20:12:29","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T00:12:29","slug":"its-time-to-stop-the-leaks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=39332","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s Time To Stop The Leaks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2020\/07\/09\/esper-announces-leak-investigation-at-pentagon\/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook.com&amp;utm_campaign=Socialflow+MAR&amp;fbclid=IwAR1zncUaNG1Ur0NoxZ7nG7nFXtjhlV0iTz_3rYDs0JQPp_MkbLGs2ocwcEk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Defense News<\/a> posted an article reporting that on Thursday U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper told members of the House Armed Services Committee that he has ordered an investigation into leaks of both classified and unclassified material to media.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>The secretary brought up what he called an aggressive effort to pursue leaks after a series of what he called \u201cbad leaks\u201d in the fall.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cI\u2019ve launched an investigation that is underway to go after leaks, whether it\u2019s of classified information or unclassified information that is sensitive and also, you know, unauthorized discussions with the media,\u201d Esper said. \u201cAll those things, again, hurt our nation\u2019s security. They undermine our troops, their safety. They affect our relations with other countries. They undermine our national policy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe illegal leaks are terrible. They\u2019re happening across the government, particularly in the Defense Department.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>He also said he is launching a new effort to \u201cremind people\u201d of operational security issues in the Pentagon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\" mco-body-item mco-body-type-text\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Esper\u2019s comments came after both he and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley reaffirmed in front of lawmakers their belief that a free and open press is vital to American democracy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article notes that former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis also tried to deal with the problem of leaks. The article mentions that at one point, he implemented a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2018\/03\/13\/air-force-orders-freeze-on-public-outreach\/\">crackdown on information sharing<\/a> at the Pentagon. As a result, what was once routine information to be shared with the public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/10\/05\/mattis-warns-dod-against-leaks-in-new-memo\/\">became opaque<\/a> over concerns of operational security.
