In Atlanta this weekend, an 8-year-old girl was shot and killed while riding in a vehicle with her mother. The driver was trying to enter a parking lot where a group of people had illegally placed barricades. Someone in the group reportedly opened fire.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Georgia<\/strong><\/a> Gov. Brian Kemp signed an order<\/a> declaring a state of emergency on Monday, authorizing the deployment of the troops.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He argued that the troops are needed to protect state buildings, including the state capitol, the\u00a0Department of Public Safety headquarters, the governor\u2019s mansion, and the Georgia World Congress Center. He noted these troops will free up state troopers from those locations to patrol the streets of Atlanta.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cPeaceful protests were hijacked by criminals with a dangerous, destructive agenda. Now, innocent Georgians are being targeted, shot, and left for dead,\u201d Kemp said in a statement on Monday. \u201cThis lawlessness must be stopped and order restored in our capital city.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kemp said that as a result, he declared an emergency \u201cbecause\u00a0the safety of our citizens comes first,\u201d adding that it will \u201callow troops to protect state property and dispatch state law enforcement officers to patrol our streets. \u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cEnough with the tough talk,\u201d the Republican governor concluded. \u201cWe must protect the lives and livelihoods of all Georgians.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Across Atlanta over the Fourth of July weekend, 31 people were shot and five people died, including an 8-year-old girl. The\u00a0Georgia State Patrol headquarters were also vandalized by protesters over the same time period, according to local media reports.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThey were armed with bricks, landscaping bricks, Molotov cocktails, fireworks. Their one mission was to destruct property and that is exactly what they did,\u201d Lt. Stephanie L. Stallings, spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Public Safety, told WSB-TV<\/a>, adding that between 60 and 100 vandals dressed in dark clothing came to the headquarters in the early-morning hours to cause havoc.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is not a protest–it is a murderous rampage of lawlessness.<\/p>\n
