Somehow they are willing to overlook the misinformation and &#8216;leaked from anonymous sources&#8217; misinformation that The New York Times routinely prints. The latest example of this is a claim by the times that &#8220;there had been a \u201clongstanding American policy treating the settlements as illegal\u201d prior to Secretary of State Pompeo\u2019s 2019 reversal of that purported policy. (\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=c317ddf1b7&amp;e=63bc10cd44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Mixed Signals on Israeli Annexation Reflect Split Among Officials<\/a>,\u201d June 22, 2020, David Halbfinger and Michael Crowley.) That is simply not true.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camera.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CAMERA<\/a> (Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis) notes the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Note that although President Carter took the position that settlements are illegal,\u00a0this was quickly reversed by the Reagan administration, which held that settlements are \u201cnot illegal.\u201d Subsequent administrations either reiterated Reagan\u2019s view or refrained from taking a position on legality.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0Note that the <em>New York Times<\/em> itself repeatedly reported on Reagan\u2019s view that settlements aren\u2019t illegal, and in the past several years has twice published corrections after wrongly suggesting the U.S. had consistently viewed settlements as illegal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0Just as those corrections were appropriate, so too is it necessary to correct last week\u2019s piece by Halbfinger and Crowley.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0Note that memos by past legal advisors in the State Department archive are advisory, and do not set policy or bind subsequent U.S. presidents. While Carter administration legal advisor Herbert Hansell believed settlements were illegal, the Reagan administration rejected that view.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CAMERA further notes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>To be fair, the <em>Times <\/em>isn\u2019t the first to make this mistake. In October 2016, the <em>Washington Post <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=5d1ebaf89d&amp;e=63bc10cd44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">corrected<\/a> its claim that the U.S. regarded settlements as illegal. A month later, the Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=36c461d607&amp;e=63bc10cd44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">corrected<\/a> the same claim. The following month, <em>The Times <\/em>(UK) <a href=\"https:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=a3e20bb592&amp;e=63bc10cd44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">corrected<\/a>, as did <a href=\"https:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=fc1286115e&amp;e=63bc10cd44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">ABC News<\/a> and the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=05dd32dbd1&amp;e=63bc10cd44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Times of Israel<\/a><\/em>. In 2018, the <em>Times of Israel<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=76447bde67&amp;e=63bc10cd44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">corrected again<\/a>. The <em>Financial Times <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=74764a47e5&amp;e=63bc10cd44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">corrected<\/a>\u00a0this same error in November 2019. And two days later the <em>Economist <\/em>ran <a href=\"https:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=5cf4858591&amp;e=63bc10cd44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">a correction<\/a> of its own.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Even the <em>New York Times <\/em>itself has, in the past, corrected this false claim. After a March 2017 editorial asserted that the U.S. \u201chas consistently held that settlement building in the occupied territories is illegal,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=838706d877&amp;e=63bc10cd44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">correction<\/a> clarified, \u201cAn earlier version of this editorial incorrectly stated the United States\u2019 position on settlement building in the occupied territories. It has been highly critical of the activity, but has not consistent [sic] held it to be illegal.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>From the news side, an August 8, 2013 correction in the <em>NY\u00a0Times <\/em>likewise <a href=\"https:\/\/camera.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=8b7948e93d155a16f6202c669&amp;id=844d353e87&amp;e=63bc10cd44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">acknowledged<\/a> that \u201cthe United States has taken no formal position in the last several years on whether [settlements] are legal or illegal.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unless those corrections were themselves in error, last week\u2019s claim about a \u201clongstanding\u201d policy that settlements are illegal (and a similar claim last November by the same reporter, David Halbfinger) can\u2019t be true.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This sort of reporting by The New York Times might help explain why much of the Jewish vote (generally readers of The New York Times) is misinformed on America&#8217;s policy toward Israel and the value of Israel in the world community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Generally speaking, The New York Times has been immune from the fact checkers.
