{"id":38475,"date":"2020-03-25T15:34:30","date_gmt":"2020-03-25T19:34:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=38475"},"modified":"2020-03-25T15:34:30","modified_gmt":"2020-03-25T19:34:30","slug":"recognizing-a-long-standing-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=38475","title":{"rendered":"Recognizing A Long-Standing Problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/cheap-manufacturing-be-damned-sentiment-builds-for-moving-u-s-companies-out-of-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Washington Examiner<\/a> posted an article today about America&#8217;s dependence on Chinese manufacturing for inexpensive products.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>American companies that produce essential goods in China should plan to shift their operations back to the United States or other Western countries, according to a senior Republican lawmaker.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"dyId3666d1711327d20a\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-dy-embedded-object=\"true\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cWe&#8217;re staring into a significant, significant crisis of supply chain,\u201d Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner told the <i>Washington Examiner<\/i>. \u201cCheap labor or cheap manufacturing be damned if you are reliant on them for your life and livelihood.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Gardner\u2019s warning was spurred by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/trump-calls-on-construction-companies-to-donate-masks-to-hospitals-during-coronavirus-outbreak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shortage<\/a> of hospital masks in the United States, a dearth driven by Beijing\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign\/taiwan-plans-to-donate-100-000-hospital-masks-to-us-per-week\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">refusal<\/a> to allow American companies that make the products in China to ship them out of the country amid the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/a-terrible-blow-coronavirus-hits-china-with-one-of-the-worst-domestic-problems-of-xi-jinpings-tenure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coronavirus pandemic<\/a>. And he\u2019s not alone in that sentiment, raising the possibility that anger over China\u2019s self-interested response to the coronavirus outbreak could produce one of the most dramatic alterations of global economics in decades.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cBecause of the coronavirus problem, people are recognizing that any supply chain that has single points of failure is incredibly vulnerable,\u201d the Heritage Foundation\u2019s Dean Cheng, a senior research fellow in the organization\u2019s Asian Studies Center, told the <i>Washington Examiner<\/i>. \u201cChina is going to be very concerned about decoupling, offshoring, [or any] redirection of investments out of China.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Obviously, the coronavirus has caused American companies to rethink outsourcing manufacturing to China, but the threats by the Chinese government have not helped the situation.<\/p>\n<p>The article notes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>That suspicion of China reflects the degree to which the coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated the tensions between the world\u2019s two largest economies. American officials are angry that Chinese Communist officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/the-key-point-is-freedom-of-speech-coronavirus-sparks-backlash-against-chinese-communist-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">censored<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/covered-up-trump-adviser-blames-china-for-coronavirus-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">early warnings<\/a> that a new virus had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/this-is-unprecedented-xi-jinping-shifts-blame-as-beijing-boasts-of-coronavirus-crackdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emerged<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense-national-security\/wuhan-coronavirus-pompeo-mocks-beijings-claim-that-coronavirus-outbreak-may-not-have-originated-in-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wuhan<\/a>. In response, fuming Chinese diplomats have accused the U.S. Army of starting the pandemic while reminding the West that China controls key parts of the medical supply chain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u201cThere could be nothing more ham-handed and catastrophic than for the Chinese to talk some more about &#8216;how the U.S. created coronavirus, and, by the way, maybe we&#8217;ll cut off pharmaceuticals,\u2019\u201d Cheng said. \u201cYou want to have a situation where there really is that kind of a backlash, where the U.S. actively tries to not only decouple but move<\/strong> <strong>specifically away from China? That&#8217;s inviting that kind of a backlash.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>America can&#8217;t afford to outsource its drug manufacturing to a country that threatens to cut off the supply.
