Two incredibly talented women felt it was necessary to flash their bodies in order to entertain the crowd. What a shame. Their singing and dancing would have been just as entertaining with more clothes and less sexuality. It is a shame that they allowed themselves to be exploited in this way rather than simply insisting on displaying their talent.<\/p>\n

Today a website called Faithwire<\/a> posted an article about the halftime show. The title of the article was, “What I Want My Teenage Daughter to Know After Jennifer Lopez and Shakira\u2019s Stripper-Like Super Bowl Halftime Show.”<\/p>\n

Some highlights from the article:<\/p>\n

I had to endure this with my teen daughter watching alongside me. Gee, thanks, guys! For a group of people who always trumpet the value of \u201csafe spaces,\u201d they certainly don\u2019t seem to care about the consequences of jamming sexually provocative \u201cperformances\u201d into programming that families will be watching.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And I wonder about Shakira and J-Lo. Like, are you seriously at this stage in life and still think it\u2019s honorable or somehow \u201cempowering\u201d to writhe around on stage as if you\u2019re trying to gain the attention of a bunch of frat boys? Sadly, this is nothing new. Culture\u2019s misguided idea that sexuality = empowerment has been around for over a century, ever since the days of Edward Bernays it\u2019s been a staple in the marketing industry. Hopefully, someday we\u2019ll see marketing that reflects a society desiring Godly values. Given the current state of affairs, however, I don\u2019t see that happening anytime soon \u2014 so the best we can do in the meantime is use opportunities such as this as teaching moments.<\/strong><\/p>\n

…Flaunting your body is not edgy or cool.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Your body is a temple. God made you and he made you beautiful. He made you in His image. He made you so He could be glorified through you, and there is nothing God-glorifying about dancing nearly naked on a stage for attention. Culture will tell you that expressing your \u201csexuality\u201d is healthy, and even powerful. God tells us the exact opposite is true. In 1 Corinthians 6:18, we\u2019re told to \u201cflee from sexual immorality.\u201d God says when we sin sexually, it is a sin \u201cagainst their own body.\u201d So we\u2019re actually harming ourselves, not empowering ourselves when it comes to sexual sin. Appealing to the sexual instincts of man is the cheapest of all ways to get attention, it\u2019s been done a billion times over, it\u2019s degrading, it\u2019s predictable \u2014 not edgy or cool.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You are not an object<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Hyper-sexual behavior will only succeed in causing others to objectify you, meaning they will only think of you for what you can offer physically. It will not transmit a message of someone who values themselves because God first valued them. In fact, you\u2019re sending the exact opposite message \u2014 you will show that you hold yourself in low regard, because of the things you\u2019re willing to do in order to gain attention. Instead of trusting that people will see you for the intrinsic gifts God has granted each and every one of us, behavior like this believes the lie that the only thing that can make us worthy of praise is acting out sexually and getting others interested in us based upon desires of the flesh.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Your true worth<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

How do we know what we\u2019re worth? Is it our job? How much money we have? How popular we are at school? How many boyfriends? How funny? How \u201csexy\u201d you are?<\/strong><\/p>\n

People often seek to \u201cfind themselves\u201d and look in many different places to do so. But in reality, you will never find your true worth in any of these places. That\u2019s because the only thing that gives you true worth is God. He made you in HIS image. That\u2019s why you have worth. No work, act, job, behavior, drug, or anything else gives you worth \u2014 God does!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Until women stand up and refuse to be exploited, we will continue to be exploited. I understand that there is tremendous pressure from the entertainment industry to display\u00a0 overt sexuality in order to be successful in the industry, but until women as a group stand up against their exploitation, it will continue. These two women are extremely talented and have worked hard to be in the shape they are in, but they didn’t need to cheapen their talent with the antics displayed last night.<\/p>\n
