Even scarier, it\u2019s still active and could blow at any time. Its last big eruption was 630,000 years ago, but as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/End-Times-Brief-Guide-World\/dp\/031644961X?tag=nypost-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-event=\"{&quot;category&quot;:&quot;affiliate ecommerce click&quot;,&quot;action&quot;:&quot;amazon&quot;,&quot;label&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/End-Times-Brief-Guide-World\/dp\/031644961X?tag=nypost-20&quot;}\" data-amzn-asin=\"031644961X\">\u201cEnd Times\u201d author Bryan Walsh<\/a>\u00a0wrote in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/21\/opinion\/supervolcano-yellowstone.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">op-ed in The New York Times,<\/a> an eruption of this supervolcano \u201cwould be like nothing humanity has ever seen\u201c and be an \u201cultra-catastrophe\u201d that \u201ccould lead to global devastation, even human extinction. \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>&#8230;The land of volcanos, Indonesia is no stranger to eruption \u2014 with Mount Merapi last exploding in 2018. But there\u2019s a bigger threat to the countries of Southeast Asia: The <a href=\"http:\/\/volcano.oregonstate.edu\/toba-rising-super-volcano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lake Toba Supervolcano<\/a> \u2014 the \u201cforgotten volcano.\u201d Lake Toba is a volcanic lake that sits on top of a huge caldera (a volcanic crater) \u2014 which is still considered to be in a stage of \u201cresurgence.\u201d An eruption 75,000 years ago caused a \u201cbottleneck\u201d effect in human development \u2014 in which the world\u2019s population dramatically shrank \u2014 according to scientists.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>&#8230;On the south slope of Hawaii\u2019s Big Island lies the infamous Hilina Slump \u2014 where every now and then there is a landslide that creates horrid tsunamis. According to The Independent, \u201cthere is evidence that a similar collapse at nearby Mauna Loa around 120,000 years ago generated a tsunami with a run-up height of <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"http:\/\/m.geology.gsapubs.org\/content\/32\/9\/741.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over 400 meters<\/a>. Even <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"http:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/ds\/2006\/171\/data\/cruise-reports\/2001\/html\/24.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as recently as 1975<\/a>, movement of the Hilina Slump generated a smaller, yet destructive tsunami that reached California.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>&#8230;The San Andreas Fault has caused havoc and devastation in the past \u2014 and it\u2019s predicted to do so again. The United States Geological Survey has increased the probability of the likelihood of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/california-nearly-guaranteed-to-get-major-earthquake-in-next-30-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">magnitude 8.0 or larger earthquake<\/a> hitting California within the next few decades \u2014 and let\u2019s not forget the volatile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnr.wa.gov\/programs-and-services\/geology\/geologic-hazards\/earthquakes-and-faults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cascadia Subduction Zone<\/a> that covers most of Oregon and Washington state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>&#8230;Another West Coast earthquake disaster waiting to happen is in Chile, on the west coast of South America. According to volcanologist website Temblor, \u201cit is clear to many of us that the Coquimbo region [in central Chile] has an unusual, increasing seismicity that may be preparing the area for a very large earthquake near the end of the present century.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You get the picture. Just for the record, it would do us all well to remember that we are here by the grace of God and will continue to be here because of that grace. It&#8217;s not as if we have any real control over any of these &#8216;pending&#8217; events.
