Unfortunately we have lost the war on poverty started by President Lyndon Johnson in the 1960&#8217;s. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialworkdegreecenter.com\/poverty-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social work degree center website<\/a>, in the 1960&#8217;s, 22 percent of Americans lived below the poverty line. In 2014, 14.8 percent of Americans lived below the poverty line. In January 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2016\/01\/11\/how-the-expensive-war-on-poverty-failed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Daily Signal<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>First, the War on Poverty has failed to achieve Johnson\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/legacy.fordham.edu\/halsall\/mod\/1964johnson-warpoverty.html\">goal<\/a>: to \u201cstrike at the causes, not just the consequences of poverty.\u201d Since he declared \u201cunconditional war,\u201d poverty has thumbed its nose at its would-be conquerors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>The official poverty rate has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/research\/reports\/2014\/09\/the-war-on-poverty-after-50-years#_ftnref17\">hovered<\/a> between ten and fifteen percent for 50 years. But that is only a part of the story. Since the 1960s, the institutions that contribute to self-sufficiency\u2014namely, marriage and work\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052702303345104579282760272285556\">have declined<\/a>. Today, more than 40 percent of children are born outside marriage; <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/2015-index-of-culture-and-opportunity\/unwed-birth-rate-f7a9dbfe37a8#.jruy57xll\">in 1964, only 7 percent were<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>&#8230;Robert Rector, senior research fellow in domestic policy studies at the Heritage Foundation, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/research\/commentary\/2014\/9\/50-years-of-failure-in-the-war-on-poverty\">writes<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0\u201ctaxpayers have spent $22 trillion on Johnson\u2019s war. Adjusted for inflation, that\u2019s three times the cost of all military wars since the American Revolution.\u201d It\u2019s time to change course. We need a new strategy against poverty.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The changes in our culture are part of the problem, but there is another increasing problem&#8211;people who come to this country to take advantage of our generous welfare system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2019\/08\/12\/trump-administration-enacts-public-charge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Breitbart<\/a> posted an article today stating:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">President Trump is set to save American taxpayers billions of dollars as his administration announces a new rule on Monday that will essentially ban welfare-dependent legal immigrants from permanently resettling in the United States.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>A new regulation set to be published by the Trump administration will ensure that legal immigrants would be less likely to secure a permanent residency in the U.S. if they have used any forms of welfare in the past, including using subsidized healthcare services, food stamps, and public housing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below is a chart of current welfare expenditures:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/ImmigrationWelfare.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36792\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/ImmigrationWelfare.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/ImmigrationWelfare.png 680w, https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/ImmigrationWelfare-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/ImmigrationWelfare-421x300.png 421w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a>I have no problem with having a safety net, but it seems that our priorities are out of order. The first group of people that we should be helping are our veterans. Too many of them come home and need help to get on their feet when they separate from the military. I would like to see that as our first priority in welfare spending.<\/p>\n<p>The article at Breitbart concludes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Currently, there is an estimated record high of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2018\/09\/14\/immigrant-numbers-break-108-year-record\/\">44.5 million<\/a>\u00a0foreign-born residents living in the U.S. This is nearly quadruple the immigrant population in 2000. The vast majority of those arriving in the country every year are low-skilled legal immigrants who compete against working and middle-class Americans for jobs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If we don&#8217;t get a handle on immigration, we are going to bankrupt America.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welfare was meant to be a safety net&#8211;not a career choice.
