What about the descendants of the soldiers who fought to free the slaves?<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cAs you probably are aware, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has legislation to study this issue, and I support that,\u201d the\u00a0California Democrat told reporters.\u00a0\u201cOne of the things that we can do not only just in terms of trying to make up for a horrible, sinful thing that happened in our country in terms of slavery, but for our country to live up to who we think we are.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\">Jackson Lee, a Democrat<\/span>\u00a0from Texas, reintroduced the\u00a0resolution last year. It currently has modest support in the House, with 35 cosponsors, and Pelosi\u2019s support comes amid renewed public discussion of the idea. But the speaker said that there are other policies that could make a more immediate impact on African-American lives. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cWe have to reduce the disparity in income in our country. We have to reduce the disparity in access to education in an affordable way in our country, reduce the health disparities in our country,\u201d she said. \u201cSo while we\u2019re studying how we deal with the reparations issue, there\u2019s plenty we can do to\u00a0improve the quality of life of many people in our country.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Several of the top candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination, including Senators\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\">Kamala Harris<\/span>\u00a0and <span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\">Elizabeth Warren and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Juli\u00e1n Castro, said last week that they support some sort of reparations.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\">The policy has historically not enjoyed majority support within the Democratic party, and both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama previously declined to support it.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I suspect that supporting a commission is a way to prevent the idea from going anywhere before the rational Democrats (assuming there are some) come to their senses and realize that this is not going to win votes from American voters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Review is reporting today that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will support a bill that would approve a commission to study the possibility of paying reparations to the descendants of American slaves.
