{"id":35090,"date":"2019-01-02T10:54:04","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T15:54:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=35090"},"modified":"2019-01-02T10:54:04","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T15:54:04","slug":"when-you-give-to-a-charity-know-where-your-money-is-going","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=35090","title":{"rendered":"When You Give To A Charity, Know Where Your Money Is Going"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizpacreview.com\/2019\/01\/01\/black-lawmakers-charity-didnt-give-out-a-single-scholarship-instead-partied-with-food-limousines-and-rap-music-708766\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BizPac Review<\/a> posted an article about the Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators, Inc., a group of black New York State legislators who run a charity to provide scholarships for black and Latino youth.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The caucus of black New York state lawmakers run a charity whose stated mission is to empower \u201cAfrican American and Latino youth through education and leadership initiatives\u201d by \u201cproviding opportunity to higher education\u201d \u2014 but it hasn\u2019t given a single scholarship to needy youth in years, according to a New York Post investigation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/12\/29\/legislators-spent-big-on-lavish-fundraisers-but-gave-no-grants-to-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">group collects money<\/a>\u00a0from companies like AT&amp;T, the Real Estate Board of New York, Time Warner Cable, and CableVision, telling them in promotional materials that they are \u201cchanging lives, one scholarship at a time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The group \u2014 called the Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators, Inc.\u00a0 \u2014 instead spent $500,000 on items like food, limousines, and rap music, the Post found.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The politicians refused to divulge the charity\u2019s 2017 tax filing to the Post\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/charities-non-profits\/public-disclosure-and-availability-of-exempt-organizations-returns-and-applications-exempt-organizations-subject-to-public-disclosure-requirements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">despite federal requirements<\/a>\u00a0that charities do so upon request.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article provides some insight as to where the money collected goes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>State. Sen. Leroy Comrie of Queens, the group\u2019s number two, refused to come out when Post reporter Isabel Vincent stopped by his office. All of the politicians mentioned are Democrats.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cThe real purpose (of the charity) is to bring people to get over their apathy and out to Albany and get motivated,\u201d\u00a0the charity\u2019s former chairman, Assemblyman Nick Perry of Brooklyn, previously said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>There has been no money used for scholarships in that past two years, the Post reported, citing sources. That\u2019s even after the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/tuplus-local\/article\/In-lawmakers-scholarship-charity-more-money-10889596.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Albany Times-Union called out<\/a>the charity in January 2017 for meager spending in prior years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The charity gave $36,000 of its $565,000 in revenue to scholarships in 2015. That year, it spent $85,000 on a concert with\u00a0Eric Benet and Regina Belle, and $157,000 on food, according to the Times-Union\u2019s analysis of its tax filings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The group said that year it planned to double the amount of scholarships it gave, but it didn\u2019t happen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>In 2017, its annual event featured the rap artist Big Daddy Kane.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hopefully the Attorney General of the State of New York will decide that the spending habits of this charity are inappropriate and require this group to actually fund some scholarships.
