Alfie Evans, the sick British toddler whose parents<\/a> won support from Pope Francis<\/a> during a protracted legal battle over his treatment, died early Saturday. He was 23 months old.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kate James and Tom Evans<\/a> made the announcement on social media, saying they were \u201cheartbroken.\u201d The death of Alfie, who had a rare degenerative brain condition that left him in a \u201csemi-vegetative state\u201d with almost no brain function<\/a>, came five days after doctors removed life support<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Doctors overseeing Alfie\u2019s care in the city of Liverpool<\/a> said further treatment was futile and not in his best interests, and that he should be allowed to die. But his parents fought for months to try to convince judges to allow them to take him to the Vatican\u2019s children\u2019s hospital so he could be kept on life support. The parents\u2019 campaign was backed by the pope and Christian groups, which helped draw international attention to the case.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The hospital withdrew Alfie\u2019s life support Monday after a series of court rulings sided with the doctors and blocked further medical treatment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am sorry that the life of a young child is not valued in Britain<\/a>.
