The outdoor recreation club was established in 1920.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Penn State Outing Club, originally founded in 1920, announced last week that the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"University\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">university<\/a> will no longer allow the club to organize outdoor, student-led trips starting next semester. The hiking, camping and other outdoors-focused activities the student-led club has long engaged in are too risky, the university\u2019s offices of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Student affairs\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Student_affairs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">Student Affairs<\/a> and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Risk management\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Risk_management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">Risk Management<\/a> determined.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1470255291270-0\" class=\"ad-placeholder\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u00a0Richard Waltz, the Outing Club\u2019s current president, said that the decision was made by an office that never consulted them.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The decision was based on a two-month review that didn\u2019t include consultation with student leaders at any of the clubs deemed too risky, according to students.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Two other outdoor recreation clubs \u2014 the spelunking Nittany Grotto Caving Club and the Nittany Divers SCUBA Club \u2014 also have been directed to end trip offerings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cSafety is a legitimate concern, but it wasn\u2019t an open dialogue,\u201d Waltz said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So what new hazards have been added to the wilderness since 1920? Is our current crop of students so delicate that outdoors is too dangerous for them?<\/p>\n<p>I suspect this move was made to protect the school from lawsuits in case someone got sunburned or got a splinter from gathering firewood, but I think it is totally ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>The article concludes:<\/p>\n<article id=\"contentArea\" class=\" noPrimaryImage \">\n<div class=\"articleBody\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Penn State conducted a \u201cproactive risk assessment\u201d not based on any previous participant injuries, according to Powers. She said Outing Club activities were rated high risk because they take place in remote environments with poor cell service and distance from emergency services.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Penn State still will offer a university-operated outdoors trip program, Powers said. The university-run program also costs much more for students, Waltz contended.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Michael Lacey\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Lacey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">Michael Lacey<\/a>, president of the Caving Club, told the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Centre Daily Times\" href=\"http:\/\/www.centredaily.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener\">Centre Daily Times<\/a> he\u2019s not surprised by the decision but says the university\u2019s reasons for ending the club trips don\u2019t make sense to him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>There\u2019s a difference between going with somebody you paid to take you on a trip and going with a bunch of your friends, Lacey said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Powers said Penn State staff members are meeting with student leaders about the transition and how the university might still support each group\u2019s goals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On June 29, 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/2938158\/youth-fail-to-qualify-military-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Time<\/a> posted an article with the headline, &#8220;<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"The Pentagon\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8709888889,-77.0559611111&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.8709888889,-77.0559611111 (The%20Pentagon)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener\">Pentagon<\/a>: 7 in 10 Youths Would Fail to Qualify for <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Military service\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Military_service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">Military Service<\/a>.&#8221; Do you think there might be a connection between that and not allowing a college outdoor club to go outdoors because it&#8217;s too risky?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday AP News reported that the outdoor recreation club at Penn State will no longer go outside because it is too dangerous in the wilderness.
