Yesterday The Daily Caller<\/a> posted an article about some of the irregularities surrounding the hiring and work of the Pakistani Information Technology<\/a> aids who worked for forty-four House Democrats<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

Every one of the 44 House Democrats who hired Pakistan-born IT aides who later allegedly made \u201cunauthorized access\u201d to congressional data appears to have chosen to exempt them from background checks<\/a>, according to congressional documents.<\/strong><\/p>\n

All of them appear to have waived background checks on Imran Awan<\/a> and his family members, even though the family of server administrators could collectively read all the emails and files of 1 in 5 House Democrats, and despite background checks being recommended for such positions, according to an inspector general\u2019s report. The House security policy requires offices to fill out a form attesting that they\u2019ve initiated background checks, but it also includes a loophole allowing them to simply say that another member vouched for them.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is amazing to me–these IT aides were not even American-born, yet members of Congress<\/a> chose not to investigate them for security clearances.<\/p>\n

The article explains why background checks would have avoided what happened later:<\/p>\n

Among the red flags in Abid\u2019s background were\u00a0a $1.1 million\u00a0bankruptcy<\/a>; six\u00a0lawsuits<\/a>\u00a0against him or a company he owned; and\u00a0at least three misdemeanor convictions including for\u00a0DUI<\/a>\u00a0and driving on a suspended license, according to Virginia court records. Public court records show that Imran and Abid operated a car dealership referred to as CIA<\/a> that took $100,000 from an\u00a0Iraqi government<\/a>\u00a0official who is a fugitive from U.S. authorities.\u00a0Numerous members of the family were tied to cryptic LLCs<\/a> such as New Dawn 2001, operated out of Imran\u2019s residence, Virginia corporation records show. Imran was the subject of repeated calls to police by\u00a0multiple<\/a>\u00a0women<\/a>\u00a0and had multiple misdemeanor convictions for driving offenses, according to court records.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If a screening had caught those, what officials say happened next might have been averted. The House inspector general reported<\/a>\u00a0on Sept. 20, 2016, that shortly before the election members of the group were logging into servers of members they didn\u2019t work for, logging in using congressmen\u2019s personal usernames, uploading data off the House network, and behaving in ways that suggested \u201cnefarious purposes\u201d and that \u201csteps are being taken to conceal their activity.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the ironies mentioned in the article:<\/p>\n

Among the 44 employers, the primary advocate for the suspects has been Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz<\/a> of Florida, who introduced a bill Monday that would require background checks on Americans purchasing ammunition<\/a>. \u201cWithout bullets a gun is just a hunk of useless metal,\u201d she said, calling ammunition the \u201cloophole\u201d in gun control policy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Okay. Background checks for American citizens purchasing ammunition, but no background checks for foreigners having access to sensitive Congressional<\/a> information. Makes perfect sense!<\/p>\n
