There is a school of thought that the Democrats<\/a> don’t want a deal on DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals<\/a><\/span>)–they want the issue in the 2018 mid-term elections. We may be about to find out if that is true.<\/p>\n

Yesterday The Washington Examiner<\/a> posted an opinion piece about the immigration deal offered by President<\/a> Trump. The deal currently on the table is to allow 1.8 illegal immigrants<\/a> who came as children to apply for U.S. citizenship (this includes 690,000 who applied for DACA status as well as others who are eligible but did not apply). In exchange, President Trump gets $25 billion to build a wall, changes the slots in the diversity visa lottery<\/a> to slots based on ‘merit’, and limits chain migration<\/a> to nuclear family members.<\/p>\n

The whole situation brings to mind a line from the movie “Men in Black<\/a>,”<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not hosting an intergallactic kegger down\u00a0here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The deal currently on the table is pretty much what Senator Schumer<\/a> asked for.<\/p>\n

The opinion piece explains:<\/p>\n

There just isn\u2019t any substantial difference and, what\u2019s more, there aren\u2019t any significant losses. Schumer won\u2019t be prostrating himself on the altar to offer his career as a sacrifice if he accepts the deal. Democrats have promised a fix for immigrant kids since literally the turn of the millennium. There’s no abandonment of principle here: Democrats have supported border security since 2006, when a majority got on board with a border fence<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Democrats can take this deal and, with a bit of courage, face their base. Of course, ending chain migration isn\u2019t insignificant. But not every Democrat bet their political fate on full-fledged amnesty. Survival is possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n
