{"id":32442,"date":"2018-01-17T18:17:20","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T23:17:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=32442"},"modified":"2018-01-17T18:17:20","modified_gmt":"2018-01-17T23:17:20","slug":"common-sense-shows-up-in-a-courtroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=32442","title":{"rendered":"Common Sense Shows Up In A Courtroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dailysignal.com\/2018\/01\/17\/judge-upholds-alabama-voter-id-law-win-common-sense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Daily Signal<\/a> is reporting today that Judge Scott Coogle, a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667 (United%20States)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener\">United States<\/a> District Judge of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alnd.uscourts.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener\">United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama<\/a>, has ruled that the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Alabama\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=32.7,-86.7&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=32.7,-86.7 (Alabama)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener\">Alabama<\/a> <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Voter ID laws\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voter_ID_laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">voter ID law<\/a> is constitutional.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>A federal judge in Alabama has <a href=\"http:\/\/sos.alabama.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/%23267%20Memorandum%20Opinion.pdf\">thrown<\/a> out a lawsuit against the state\u2019s voter ID law, finding that the law doesn\u2019t prevent anyone from voting because \u201cnearly the entire population of registered voters in Alabama already possess a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Photo identification\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Photo_identification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">photo ID<\/a> that can be used for voting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>For those who don\u2019t, obtaining a qualifying ID can be done \u201cwith little to no effort and no cost.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>In 2011, the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Alabama Legislature\" href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.state.al.us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener\">Alabama Legislature<\/a> passed a photo ID requirement for both in-person and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Absentee ballot\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Absentee_ballot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">absentee voting<\/a>. The law was enacted in an effort to strengthen voter confidence and to reduce the potential for voter fraud in the state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Alabama law accepts seven different types of ID, including an Alabama driver\/non-driver\u2019s license, a photo <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Identity document\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Identity_document\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">ID card<\/a> issued by any state or the federal government, a U.S. passport, a student or employee ID, a military ID card, or a tribal ID card.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Voters can obtain a voter ID card from the state for free\u2014something that as of fall of 2017, only 33 voters in the entire state had requested. And voters who need a birth or marriage certificate to get an ID can get those for free, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>In addition, even if voters show up at a voting booth without an ID, they can still vote if two election officials at the polling place positively identify them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Those voting absentee are required to include a photocopy of their photo ID (in a separate envelope) when they mail in their ballot. Individuals without an ID can vote by <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Provisional ballot\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Provisional_ballot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">provisional ballot<\/a>, and that ballot will be counted if they show the local county registrar an ID by the Friday after the election.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately we live in a world where showing a photo ID has become a fact of life. When I go to the doctor&#8217;s office, I have to show a photo ID. If I board an airplane, I have to show a photo ID (and soon, as license requirements change in some states, a passport will be necessary). Anyone can easily get a photo ID, and states with photo ID requirements to vote will provide them to people at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>This is a common sense ruling.
