The states that lost the most population in 2017 were <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Illinois\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.0,-89.0&amp;spn=3.0,3.0&amp;q=40.0,-89.0 (Illinois)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener\">Illinois<\/a>, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"New Jersey\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.0,-74.5&amp;spn=3.0,3.0&amp;q=40.0,-74.5 (New%20Jersey)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener\">New Jersey<\/a>, and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"New York City\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United Van Lines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Van_Lines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">United Van Lines<\/a>, which tracks state-to-state migration patterns, found that Illinois was the top state for outbound migration with 63 percent of moves going out of state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;The Northeast continues to experience a moving deficit with New Jersey (63 percent outbound), New York (61 percent) and Connecticut (57 percent) making the list of top outbound states for the third consecutive year,&#8221; the report states. &#8220;Massachusetts (56 percent) also joined the top outbound list this year.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The other states that led the nation for the highest outbound migration were <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Kansas, Ohio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kansas%2C_Ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">Kansas, Ohio<\/a>, Kentucky, Utah, and Wisconsin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is interesting that the top four states are controlled by the Democratic party and have high taxes (also cold weather).<\/p>\n<p>The states that grew in population were also listed in the article:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The 10 states with the highest inbound migration were Vermont, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"South Dakota\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=44.5,-100.0&amp;spn=3.0,3.0&amp;q=44.5,-100.0 (South%20Dakota)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener\">South Dakota<\/a>, Washington, South Carolina, North Carolina, Colorado, and Alabama. The data find that more Americans are moving to the Mountain West and the South.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article concludes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>According to the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tax Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.taxfoundation.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener\">Tax Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/americans-move-2017\/?utm_source=Tax+Foundation+Newsletters&amp;utm_campaign=28cdf6ca7c-RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_8387957ec9-28cdf6ca7c-428942593&amp;mc_cid=28cdf6ca7c&amp;mc_eid=024e20ae43\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">there<\/a> is a relationship between taxes and migration.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;Individuals move for a variety of factors,&#8221; the group states. &#8220;Climate, job opportunities, family, among others, impact the decision to relocate. Taxes can influence the decision too.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;Tax rates and structure affect a state\u2019s economy; states with less burdensome tax structures and lower rates tend to have better economic growth,&#8221; the foundation explains. &#8220;Increased job opportunities can result from the better economic growth.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;Someone moving to Chicago for a new job could decide to live in Illinois or commute from Indiana,&#8221; the group says. &#8220;Indiana&#8217;s 3.3 percent individual income tax rate could be an encouragement to locate in that state over Illinois&#8217; 3.75 percent rate. An individual moving to the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Washington, D.C.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dc.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener\">Washington, D.C.<\/a>, area could decide to live in Virginia instead of the District because income taxes are lower.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As more people leave the higher-tax states, the tax burden on the people remaining will increase. That is going to create situations like Detroit, where people simply leave their homes because they can&#8217;t afford the taxes. In some of these high-tax states, elderly people on fixed incomes are being forced out of their homes because they cannot afford the taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Voting with your feet is a great idea as long as the people moving to lower-tax states don&#8217;t bring their high-tax ideas with them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Washington Free Beacon posted a story today about migration within the United States.
