{"id":32332,"date":"2018-01-06T20:03:24","date_gmt":"2018-01-07T01:03:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=32332"},"modified":"2018-01-06T20:03:24","modified_gmt":"2018-01-07T01:03:24","slug":"saving-the-government-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=32332","title":{"rendered":"Saving The Government Money"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2018\/01\/06\/food-stamp-enrollment-drops-2-million-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Breitbart<\/a> is reporting today that enrollment in the food stamp program has dropped by two million since President Trump took office.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Department of Agriculture\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8879388889,-77.0300333333&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.8879388889,-77.0300333333 (United%20States%20Department%20of%20Agriculture)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener\">USDA<\/a> data show that the number of people enrolled in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supplemental_Nutrition_Assistance_Program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program<\/a> (SNAP), the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Government\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">government program<\/a> that administers food stamps,\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/fns-prod.azureedge.net\/sites\/default\/files\/pd\/34SNAPmonthly.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">plunged<\/a> to\u00a042,182,443 in fiscal year (<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Fiscal year\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fiscal_year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">FY<\/a>) 2017\u00a0\u2014a drop of 2,036,920 from the 44,219,363 <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/fns-prod.azureedge.net\/sites\/default\/files\/pd\/SNAPsummary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">enrolled<\/a> in FY 2016.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Participation in the program is at its lowest level since 2010, when 40,302,000 people\u00a0<a class=\" x5l\" href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2017\/12\/25\/seven-reasons-2017-was-the-year-of-the-food-stamp-turnaround\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enrolled<\/a>\u00a0in the program.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Food stamp enrollment steadily declined after 2013, when participation in the government program\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/pd\/SNAPsummary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">swelled<\/a>\u00a0to 47.6 million\u2014the highest amount it has ever been\u00a0since former <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Lyndon B. Johnson\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lyndon_B._Johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">President Lyndon Johnson<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/snap\/short-history-snap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">authorized<\/a>\u00a0the creation of the food stamp program in 1964. Taxpayers spent $79.8 million on SNAP when enrollment reached its peak in 2013.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article includes other ways that the Trump Administration is planning to cut the cost of the program:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The USDA announced in December that the agency would\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/media\/press-releases\/2017\/12\/05\/usda-promises-new-snap-flexibilities-promote-self-sufficiency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">give<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Government agency\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Government_agency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">state agencies<\/a> more autonomy over administering SNAP as one way to curb costs of the multi-billion dollar <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Welfare\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Welfare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">welfare program<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The federal government is also <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"http:\/\/www.governing.com\/topics\/health-human-services\/gov-food-stamps-congress-trump-states.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">examining<\/a> policy ideas being considered at the state level, such as limiting the number of family members who can make purchases using a SNAP card and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Drug testing welfare recipients\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drug_testing_welfare_recipients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">drug-testing welfare recipients<\/a>, to potentially implement them nationwide.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cutting taxes is a wonderful idea, but cutting spending is also very much needed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Breitbart is reporting today that enrollment in the food stamp program has dropped by two million since President Trump took office.
