CBS News New York<\/a> is reporting today that scientists<\/a> may have accidentally stumbled upon a drug that will help treat people with Alzheimer’s disease<\/a>. The scientists were working with a drug they hoped could be used to treat diabetes.<\/p>\n

According to a press release<\/a> from researchers at Lancaster University<\/a>, a new drug<\/a> being tested for diabetes patients was found to have \u201csignificantly reversed memory loss\u201d in test subjects and is now being examined as possible treatment for\u00a0neurodegenerative disorders<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The medication, known as\u00a0a triple receptor drug \u2014 or \u201ctriple agonist\u201d \u2014 reportedly works in multiple ways to protect the brain against degeneration and promote growth. Researchers say that a study of mice being given the drug found that the animals had an increased ability to learn and retain memories.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThese very promising outcomes demonstrate the efficacy of these novel multiple receptor drugs that originally were developed to treat type 2 diabetes,\u201d\u00a0Professor Christian Holscher said in the release.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The scientists added that the mice showed a decrease in chronic inflammation<\/a> and\u00a0amyloid plaques<\/a> in the brain, which have been linked to the development of Alzheimer\u2019s in people.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The article further explains that scientists have found a link between some of the symptoms of diabetes<\/a> and Alzheimer’s–insulin desensitisation has been observed both in people suffering from Alzheimer’s and people suffering from diabetes.<\/p>\n
