Yesterday PJ Media<\/a> posted an article about the impact of the legalization of marijuana<\/a> in Colorado<\/a>. There is still not a clear picture of the effect of the legislation.<\/p>\n

The article lists some of the negative impact:<\/p>\n

Along with five years of legal weed<\/a>, Colorado has also seen its homeless population swell to a level that is among the highest in America<\/a>. The Gazette<\/em> editorial board sees a link between people living on the street and the availability of free weed because homeless shelter directors said substance abusers<\/a> move to Colorado because it\u2019s easier to score a bag of weed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

More kids than ever are getting high inside Colorado\u2019s K-12 schools, the Gazette<\/em> also reported. Drug violations reported by the state\u2019s public schools increased <\/a>45 percent since the legalization of pot, according to a 2016 Rocky Mountain PBS<\/a> investigation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The article further reports:<\/p>\n

On top of all of that, something stinks in Colorado Springs.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cVisitors to Colorado remark about a new agricultural smell, the wafting odor of pot as they drive near warehouse grow operations along Denver freeways,\u201d the Gazette<\/em> editorial read<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cResidential neighborhoods throughout Colorado Springs reek of marijuana, as producers fill rental homes with plants,\u201d the Gazette<\/em> added.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The article states that there have been some problems with overdoses:<\/p>\n

Dr. Daniel Vigil of the Marijuana Health Monitoring and Research Program at the Colorado Department of Public Health<\/a> said those \u201cbumps in the road\u201d included \u201crare deaths.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The marijuana fatalities included \u201cone following overconsumption, paranoia and falling off a balcony,\u201d Vigil told<\/a> Insider Louisville. Another death involved \u201cunintentional ingestion of a large dose of THC<\/a> in a candy bar.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vigil said new regulations and policies are needed to prevent marijuana overdoses.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have no problem with marijuana being available in pill form for medical purposes. I do, however, question the wisdom of legalizing another substance that may interfere with the ability of people to function. Marijuana may not be addictive, but I clearly remember a teenager I knew years ago who began smoking in his teens and thoroughly changed his life for the worse because of it.
