Man&#8217;s use of fossil fuels has not been proven to be the source of climate change. Climate change has happened since climate began. All of these statements are very logical and true, but somehow those pursuing &#8216;green energy&#8217; work very hard to periodically convince all of us that if we use fossil fuel, we are all going to die next week (while flying around in their private jets). Green energy is in theory a great idea, but I can&#8217;t help thinking that the search for a totally green source of energy is somehow related to the search for the perpetual motion machine. It&#8217;s a great idea, but it defies the law of physics. At any rate, we are doing better at keeping the environment clean today than we were in the early 1900&#8217;s despite much greater energy usage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2017\/10\/12\/dirty-bird-carcasses-tell-the-story-of-how-air-pollution-has-improved-in-the-last-100-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WattsUpWithThat<\/a> posted an article today about some observations from scientists at the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Field Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fieldmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener\">Field Museum<\/a> in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Chicago\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofchicago.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener\">Chicago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The article includes the following picture:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BirdPictures.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31741\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BirdPictures.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"655\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BirdPictures.png 655w, https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BirdPictures-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/BirdPictures-439x300.png 439w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/a>The article explains:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Horned Larks are cute little songbirds with white bellies and yellow chins\u2013at least, now they are. A hundred years ago, at the height of urban smoke pollution in the US, their pale feathers were stained dark gray by the soot in the atmosphere. A new paper in the\u00a0<em><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener\">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/a><\/em>\u00a0shows that the discoloration of birds in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Collection (artwork)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Collection_%28artwork%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener\">museum collections<\/a> can be used to trace the amount of black carbon in the\u00a0air over time and the effects of environmental policy upon pollution.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cThe soot on these birds\u2019 feathers allowed us to trace the amount of black carbon in the air over time, and we found that the air at the turn of the century was even more polluted than scientists previously thought,\u201d says Shane DuBay, a graduate student at The Field Museum and the University of Chicago and one of the authors of the study. He and co-author Carl Fuldner, also a graduate student at <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"University of Chicago\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=41.7897222222,-87.5997222222&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=41.7897222222,-87.5997222222 (University%20of%20Chicago)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener\">UChicago<\/a>, analyzed over a thousand birds collected over the last 135 years to determine and quantify the effects of soot in the air over cities in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Rust Belt\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.9467,-79.892&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=40.9467,-79.892 (Rust%20Belt)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener\">Rust Belt<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8230;Birds were also ideal candidates for the study because they molt and grow a new set of feathers every year, meaning that the soot on them had only been accumulating for the past year when they were collected. And there was an apparent trend: old birds were dirtier, and new birds were cleaner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article concludes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>DuBay notes that in addition to the environmental implications of the project, their work also shows the importance of museum collections like those they used from The Field Museum in Chicago, the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Carnegie Museum of Natural History\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carnegiemnh.org\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener\">Carnegie Museum of Natural History<\/a> in Pittsburgh, and the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"University of Michigan\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=42.283,-83.735&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=42.283,-83.735 (University%20of%20Michigan)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener\">University of Michigan<\/a> Museum of Zoology in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Ann Arbor, Michigan\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=42.223,-83.7456666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=42.223,-83.7456666667 (Ann%20Arbor%2C%20Michigan)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener\">Ann Arbor<\/a>. \u201cI hope this study exposes collections as a valuable resource to address present day environmental concerns,\u201d says DuBay. \u201cThis paper shows the ways that natural history collections can be used, underlining the value in collections and in continuing to build collections, to help us improve our understanding of human impacts on the natural world.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fossil fuel is now abundantly available in America. We can use our scientific talents to make it as clean as possible.
